Spenner Triumphs Twice in Indoor Track Opener

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sami Spenner won two events to lead the Omaha track & field team at the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday, its first meet of the indoor season.
Spenner won the long jump with a top mark of 19-08 to win by 11 inches over Kansas State's Alyssa Kelly. Freshman Nicole Liske made her debut with a seventh-place finish, jumping a distance of 17-05 ¼.
Spenner also took first in the triple jump with a distance of 41-01 to win by more than four feet over Fort Hays State's Savannah Rose. Liske was fifth at 35-06 ¾, and Jessica Ripp took eight at 33-10.
In other field events, newcomer Amanda Conlin was fifth in the shot put with a mark of 40-08 ¼ while fellow freshman Megan Adams was eighth at 38-05.
In the weight throw, Liz Thompson took fifth with a toss of 46-11 ¾.
In other track events, Terri Armstrong finished second in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.87, a new personal best. Freshman Maddie Diggs was ninth at 8.38, and Ripp was 11th in a time of 8.56.
Armstrong also was 10th in the 300 meter dash with a time of 42.74.
Spenner also ran third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.87.
Freshman Alyssa Thavenet was third in the 600 yard dash with a time of 1:29.31.
The Mavericks will have more than a month off before returning to action at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Nebraska on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18.
