Mavs Head to Wichita State Winter Classic

The Omaha women's basketball team heads to Wichita, Kan., this weekend for two games at the Wichita State Winter Classic at Charles Koch Arena. On Saturday, UNO will tip off with UT-Pan American at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Mavs will face Austin Peay at Noon before returning home. Both games will air live on 1180 Zone 2 with Jon Green on the play-by-play. Live audio and live stats links for both games can be found at OMavs.com. The Wichita State Winter Classic will be the Mavs' first tournament since the Metro State Classic on Nov. 11-12, 2011. The four-team tournament will be the first for the Mavs against Division I teams. UNO will not face the host Shockers.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 5-5 after a pair of blowout wins at home over Air Force and Eureka last week. UNO is a perfect 5-0 at home but is still looking for its first win away from the Sapp Fieldhouse this season. The Mavericks rank first in The Summit League in opponents' field goal percentage (35.2 percent) and opponents' 3-point percentage (24.2 percent), the latter of which ranks 10th in the nation. UNO is allowing 62.6 points per game, second best in the conference. On the offensive end, the Mavs are averaging 75.9 points per game to rank third among league teams.
UT-Pan American is 6-4 overall after a 75-63 win over UT Arlington on Wednesday. It matches the best start in program history. The Broncs finish the tournament against Wichita State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. UTPA is led by Shante' Goff's 11.0 points per game. KaeLynn Boyd adds 9.8 points per game, while Brittany Bush chips in 9.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. The Broncs come into the game averaging 7.6 made 3-pointers per game while forcing 22.9 turnovers per game.
Austin Peay enters the weekend with a 3-7 record after suffering an 81-70 loss against Chattanooga on Wednesday. The Governors, losers of four straight games, play Wichita State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in their first game of the tournament. Austin Peay has wins over Southern Illinois (71-69), Trevecca (98-77) and Central Arkansas (81-60) this season. Sophomore guard Tiasha Gray leads the team with 16.0 points and 5.5 assists per game. Gray was an Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team pick last season. Kristen Stainback adds 11.0 ppg.

Felicia Anderson had a career-high 21 points, while Ericka House added 19. The two combined to go 9-of-18 from 3-point range, and the Mavs as a team shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from long distance. For the game, the Mavs were 41-of-71 (57.7 percent) from the field, the fourth-best shooting performance in school history. Sami Pawlak had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Victoria Trowbridge had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards. Mikaela Shaw also finished in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. UNO tied the school record with 10 blocked shots in the game. In addition to Taijhe Kelly's six, Trowbridge had three and Lanese Bough had one. The Mavs outrebounded Eureka 52-24 and shot 57.7 percent overall (41-of-71).
