Mavs Sharp in 73-61 Win Over UTPA in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. - The Omaha women's basketball team put together a strong performance for a 73-61 win over Texas-Pan American in the first game of the Wichita State Winter Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-5) picked up their third straight win and their first away from the Sapp Fieldhouse this season. UTPA fell to 6-5 overall.
Ericka House had a game-high 21 points to go with five rebounds. Madi Robson had a career-high 14 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. Taijhe Kelly had her second double-double of the season, 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked four shots.
The Mavericks shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the floor and hit 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from 3-point range. House and Felicia Anderson each had three treys for the Mavericks. UTPA came into the game allowing just 58.1 points per game, but the Mavs used excellent ball movement to consistently find open shooters and create easy shots down low as well. The Mavs also outrebounded the Broncs 41-33.
UTPA, off to the best start in school history with six wins in its first 10 games, hit 8-of-33 (24.2 percent) from 3-point range, which is not far off from its season average (27.5 percent). But the Mavs didn't allow UTPA to get easy points inside the arc, holding the Broncs to just 26 points inside the arc, compared to 44 for the Mavs.
Trailing 5-3 in the opening minutes, the Mavs went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-5 lead, which they would never relinquish. After UTPA answered with a bucket, Anderson hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 17-7 advantage. The Mavs built the lead to 26-12 on a House 3-pointer with 7:01 left in the half. UTPA scored the next six points, but Mikaela Shaw put an end to that with a 3-pointer at 3:28 for a 29-18 lead. The Mavs took an eight-point edge into the locker room, 30-22.
UNO outrebounded UTPA 25-13 in the first half and had eight offensive rebounds, four by Kelly. The Mavs held the Broncs to just 3-of-16 (19 percent) from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
UTPA cut the lead to 37-32 shortly after halftime, but Shaw finished on the baseline and Sami Pawlak converted an old-fashioned three-point play to build the lead back to 42-32. After the Broncs hit a free throw, House scored from the middle of the paint and Robson banked home a 12-footer for a 46-33 lead at the 13:05 mark.
The Mavs built the lead to 16 points, 60-44, after Kelly hit consecutive layups and Anderson knocked in a triple from the wing with 8:02 left. But UTPA reeled off a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to get back within 60-51 at the 6:02 mark. Out of a timeout, Robson drove to her left and scored to push the lead back to 11. After a free throw by UTPA's Brittany Bush, House scored from the baseline to make it 64-52.
The Broncs made one last push when they got within eight, 64-56 with 2:40 to go, but Robson hit a 3 and after a steal by Lanese Bough, Robson scored again with a mid-range jumper for a 69-56 lead with 1:31 remaining.
Omaha closes play at the Wichita State Winter Classic on Sunday at Noon against Austin Peay.
