The No. 16 Omaha Mavericks will play their final games of 2013 this weekend when they visit Colorado College for a National Collegiate Hockey Conference series on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m. MT, and Saturday's contest faces off at 7:07 p.m. MT.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 8-6-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the NCHC, good for first place. The Mavericks are coming off a sweep of Miami two weeks ago, winning 6-3 and 3-1. The Mavs are 3-1-0 on the road this year, but they haven't played away from home since Nov. 1-2 when they traveled to Denver. The Mavs are 5-3-1 all-time against Colorado College including a record of 2-2-0 in Colorado Springs.
Colorado College has posted a record of 1-10-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the NCHC, putting it in a four-way tie for fifth place. The Tigers were swept by visiting New Hampshire in a non-conference series last weekend, losing 6-2 and 3-0. CC is 1-4-1 at home this year including a mark of 1-1-1 in NCHC home games. The Tigers are winless in their last 12 games (0-10-2).
Last Time Out
The Mavericks earned their second sweep of the season, stopping then No. 8 Miami, 6-3 and 3-1. In the opener, the Mavs scored five goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit. Austin Ortega led the assault with two goals and an assist while Brock Montpetit added a goal and two helpers. Dominic Zombo and Johnnie Searfoss also scored in the stanza. Miami got a pair of goals in the last minute to draw to within 5-3, but Josh Archibald scored a powerplay goal in the third to squelch any comeback bid. Ryan Massa made 29 saves in the win.
On Saturday, the Mavericks spotted the RedHawks a 1-0 lead midway through the first period but tied the game 1:40 later on an unassisted powerplay goal by Ryan Walters. Tanner Lane gave the Mavs the lead with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 3:55 of the second, a goal that also was unassisted. Dominic Zombo scored an insurance goal on the power play at 10:11 of the third to provide the final margin. Massa stopped 25 shots to improve to 5-2-0. The sweep of the RedHawks was the first for UNO since the 2001-02 season and gave the Mavs a three-game winning streak against Miami dating back to 2010.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 344-189-49 (.633) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 82-74-16 (.523).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Scott Owens is in his 15th season as head coach at Colorado College. The 1979 graduate of CC is 318-214-50 all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by Joe Bonnett and Eric Rud.
