The UNO softball team heads to Denton, Texas this weekend for five games at the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. All games will be played at Lovelace Stadium. The Mavs begin on Friday against Dayton at 11:30 a.m. and play under the lights against North Texas at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UNO faces Oklahoma State at 9 a.m. and Iowa at 2 p.m. The Mavs close the weekend against Dayton at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Series History
UNO is 1-2 all-time against Oklahoma State and 1-1 vs. Iowa. The Mavs last played OSU in 1982 with the Cowgirls winning 3-2 in eight innings. UNO played Iowa both times in 1981, the last time a 7-6 victory for UNO. The Mavs have never played Dayton or North Texas.
Last Time Out
The Omaha softball team went 5-0 and won the tournament title at the UNCW Beach Blast last weekend in Wilmington, N.C. The Mavs beat Iona (7-0), UNC-Wilmington (6-2), Iona (16-0, 5 inn.), Detroit (7-2) and Detroit again (5-2). Junior first baseman Amber Lutmer led the Mavericks with four home runs in the tournament, all coming in the final three games. On the weekend, she went 7-for-15 at the plate (.467) with four home runs, 13 RBIs and seven runs scored. Sophomore transfer center fielder Allie Mathewson also cranked four home runs - the first three of which led off the first three games - and junior pitcher Dana Elsasser returned to her dominant form of last year, going 3-0 in the circle with a 0.78 ERA. Elsasser pitched one shutout, combined for another and allowed just five hits and two earned runs in 18.0 innings. Kat Barrow went 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA. Barrow struck out 13 and allowed four earned runs in 14.0 innings. Freshman catcher Campbell Ditto showed her talent with a .412 average and two home runs on the weekend.
Mavs Off to a Perfect Start
The Mavs' 5-0 start marks the best start since the 2002 season when the Mavs began 19-0. The Mavs have opened just five seasons all-time with five straight wins: 2013, 2002, 1999, 1997 and 1970.
Mavs Dig the Long Ball
The Mavericks crushed 12 home runs in the five games at the UNCW Beach Blast after finishing with just 18 all of last season. Amber Lutmer and Allie Mathewson each had four homers, while Campbell Ditto had two, and Molly Negrete and Ashton Hughes each had one. It's quite a turnaround from last season, when UNO hit just one home run in the first 12 games of the season. The Mavs didn't reach 12 home runs last year until April 4, the 28th game of the season.

The UNO softball team continues its month of traveling every weekend when it heads to Jackson, Miss., for the Jackson State Tournament next weekend at JSU Softball Field. Although the Mavericks will play five games, they will only face two opponents, Evansville (three times) and Jackson State (twice).

Scouting North Texas
The Mean Green posted a 3-2 record at the Texas Classic to finish second place last weekend. North Texas beat Memphis twice and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and lost to No. 7 Texas twice. Jordan Terry hit .400 with five RBIs. Lesley Hirsch hit .333 with five runs scored. Ashley Kirk posted a 1-1 record with a 3.23 ERA in two complete-game starts. Brittany Simmons went 1-1 with a 0.75 ERA.
Scouting Oklahoma State
The Cowgirls are 2-2 after their opening weekend at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. Oklahoma State beat Weber State (2-1, 8 inn.) and Colorado State (4-1), but fell to Seattle (3-2) and Utah Valley (3-1). Tarah Ettinger has a .538 average and three RBIs to lead the Cowgirls. Oklahoma State scored just five runs in the four games and didn't hit any home runs. Simone Freeman was 1-2 in the circle with a 3.71 ERA. Kat Espinosa was 1-0 with a 0.40 ERA.

The Hawkeyes went 3-2 at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. Iowa opened with a 4-0 loss to Lipscomb but responded with wins over Texas State (5-4), Houston (4-1) and No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette (13-10). Iowa closed the tournament with an 11-0 loss in five innings to Louisiana-Lafayette. Johnnie Dowling leads the Hawkeyes with a .389 average, and Megan Blank hits .333 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Kayla Massey is 1-2 with a 5.25 ERA and two complete games.

Elsasser led the Mavs to a perfect weekend at the UNCW Beach Blast with a 3-0 record and 0.78 ERA to earn her first Summit League award in the Mavs' first year in the conference. On the weekend, Elsasser struck out 10, while allowing five hits, two earned runs and one walk in 18 innings of work for a 0.78 ERA. She held her opponents to a .088 batting average.
Lutmer Climbing Home Run Chart
Junior slugger Amber Lutmer is making her mark on the all-time home run chart in UNO history. Lutmer has 26 home runs to rank seventh in school history. She is just one away from moving into a tie for fifth. The school record holder is Leslie Svoboda with 34 home runs from 2005-07.
Lutmer Drives Them Home
Junior Amber Lutmer has been a run-producing machine so far in her UNO career. Lutmer has 98 career RBIs to rank tied for 18th in school history. She climbed seven spots from last week to this week after 13 RBIs in five games at the UNCW Beach Blast. The school RBI record is 158, set by Holly Voss from 1994-97. Lutmer had 43 RBIs last season and 42 in her freshman season, both of which led the Mavericks. With similar run production this season, Lutmer would find herself in the top 10 in school history after just three seasons.
Elsasser Back in Circle after Stellar Sophomore Season
Although just a junior, pitcher Dana Elsasser has already established herself as one of the all-time great pitchers in UNO history. Elsasser posted a 1.07 ERA as a sophomore in 2012, which ranked second among all Division I pitchers. Her 23 earned runs allowed were the fewest among any Division I starting pitcher who pitched at least 150.0 innings last season. Her career ERA of 1.08 ranks third in school history, and her career opponent batting average of .188 ranks second.
Redding on the Basepaths
Senior outfielder Lindsay Redding has 33 career stolen bases to rank 14th in school history. Redding won't surpass the school record of 113 set by Toni Novak from 1994-97, but she is just seven steals away from reaching the top 10 and 17 away from the top five. Last season, Redding is 2-for-2 this season.
Mathewson Accomplishes Incredible Feat
Sophomore Creighton transfer Allie Mathewson made the most of her Maverick debut, hitting a leadoff home run in the first at-bat of the season for the Mavs on Feb. 8 against Iona. In fact, she enjoyed it so much that she did it again in the Mavs' second game of the season. And then again in the third game. Indeed, the Papillion-La Vista South product led off three straight games to begin the season with a home run, something that has never been done before in school history. She ended the UNCW Beach Blast with four home runs to her credit.
