LINCOLN, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team posted more personal best times and distances in its last meet of the regular season, the Nebraska Tune-Up.
Sami Spenner continued her pursuit of personal bests, winning the triple jump with a mark of 42-07 ½, more than a foot farther than runner up Mara Griva of Nebraska.
Spenner also took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-05. Teammate Kathie-Lee Laidley posted the same mark but ended up seventh due to a tiebreaker.
Spenner also got sixth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.73, good for sixth place.
Also on the track, Katarina Zarudnaya finished third in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:12.53. It's the top time run by a Maverick in the event this year. Lauren Psota was right behind in fourth with a personal best time of 2:15.55.
Maja Mihalinec took third in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.58.
In the mile, Ashley Kildow ran ninth with a time of 5:12.36, just shy of her personal best. Nicole Behm was 12th with a personal best time of 5:15.74 and Kristin Rogers, running the event for the first time, finished 15th in a time of 5:27.68. Michelle Gatewood also posted a personal best time of 5:50.95, putting her in 24th place.
Three of four Mavericks had personal bests in the 1,000 meters. Amanda Vorthmann took second with a personal best time of 2:54.43, just two seconds off the school record, while Kildow had a PR with a time of 3:06.18, good for eighth place. Carolyn Newhouse was ninth at 3:11.36, just shy of her PR, and Rogers ran a time of 3:13.81, also a PR, putting her in 10th place.
Two of UNO's freshmen set personal bests in the 5,000 meters. Karo Garcia was 8th with a time of 18:54.11, almost a full minute better than her previous best. Avery Schmidt finished 17th with a PR of 20:13.06, 27 seconds faster than her previous PR.
All four Mavs in the 3,000 meters set new personal bests. Nicole Behm led the way, finishing 11th in a time of 10:42.60. Kristen Carmichael was 12th at 10:43.79 followed by MiKayla Peck (14/10:46.99) and Kayla Fenske (22/11:00.39).
Finally, the team of Terri Armstrong, Zarudnaya, Vorthmann and Psota took ninth in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 4:02.90.
Also in the field events, Liz Thompson set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 42-02, good for seventh place. Lianne McNaughton took fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 51-09 ¾.
The Mavericks now prepare for the Summit League indoor championships which will be held on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 24-25 at South Dakota.
