Mavs Meet Evansville, Jackson State at JSU Tournam

Weekly Release
The UNO softball team (9-1) continues its month of traveling every weekend when it heads to Jackson, Miss., for the Jackson State Tournament this weekend at JSU Softball Field. Although the Mavericks will play five games, they will only face two opponents. UNO plays Evansville on Friday at 3 p.m. and follows with Jackson State at 5 p.m. On Saturday, UNO plays Evansville and Jackson State at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. On Sunday, UNO closes the tournament against Evansville again at 11 a.m. There will not be live stats for this tournament.
Series History
UNO is 1-0 against Evansville, winning 9-1 in 1989 at the Southern Illinois Tournament. Omaha has never played Jackson State.
The Teams
The Mavs are off to a 9-1 start, matching the best start since the 2003 season when the Mavs began 19-1. UNO also started the 2011 season 9-1. The Mavs opened the 2013 campaign with five straight wins for the fifth-time in school history.
Evansville (0-5) lost all five games it played at the Troy Invitational last weekend. The Purple Aces lost to Virginia Tech twice, Troy twice and North Florida once.
Jackson State is 3-8 on the season. The Tigers have faced some tough competition, playing Arkansas twice and Ole Miss once for three of their eight losses. Jackson State's wins have come against Southeast Missouri State, Central Arkansas and Lamar. The Tigers play a doubleheader on Tuesday against Belhaven.
Last Time Out
The Mavs went 4-1 at the North Texas Lovelace Invitational last weekend, beating Dayton twice, Oklahoma State and host North Texas. The Mavs' only loss was a 2-1 decision to tournament champion Iowa, which also finished with a 4-1 record but held the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mavs. Allie Mathewson, Lindsay Redding, Campbell Ditto and Dana Elsasser were all named to the all-tournament team. Mathewson was a unanimous selection with a .375 batting average from the leadoff spot with two doubles, one home run and seven RBIs on the weekend. She hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Elsasser went 3-1 in the circle with a 0.75 ERA to lead the Mavs. She held opponents to a .192 batting average and threw two shutouts. Elsasser's weekend was highlighted by a 1-0 (8 inn.) shutout win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Elsasser took a perfect game into the top of the seventh inning before allowing a one-out single to right field. Until that hit, no ball had gotten past the Maverick infield. Elsasser ended up facing the minimum 24 batters while allowing just one hit and no walks and striking out a season-high eight batters for her second shutout of the season.

The UNO softball team travels to Fort Collins, Colo., next weekend for the Colorado State Classic at Ram Field. The Mavs begin play on Friday against Bradley at 10 a.m. (Central) and follow with a 12:15 p.m. game against Brown. UNO will only play one game on Saturday, a 12:15 p.m. matchup with host Colorado State. UNO closes play on Sunday against Brown at 10 a.m. and No. 22 Washington at 2:30 p.m.

Second baseman Tara Trede is hitting .310 with one triple, four RBIs and four runs scored.
• The Mavs lead the conference in runs (60), home runs (14), on-base percentage (.402) and slugging percentage (.504).
• UNO also boasts the best ERA in the league (1.13) and has the best fielding percentage (.985).
• Campbell Ditto's eight-game hitting streak to begin her freshman season came to an end against Iowa on Feb. 16. Ditto's eight-game streak is the longest by a Mav this season.
Scouting Evansville
Halie Malone hit .500 on opening weekend to lead the Purple Aces. Kayla Fortner hit .286 and had a home run and four RBIs. Annie Moore started three games and went 0-3 with a 7.70 ERA. Sarah Patterson was 0-2 with an 11.81 ERA. The Purple Aces used two pitchers in relief, Taylor Perry and Sarah Baldwin.
Scouting Jackson State
The Tigers are led by Jasmine Warren's .400 batting average. The Tigers haven't hit a home run this season but have only allowed two so far. Breea Jamerson has started five games with a 1-4 record and 4.10 ERA. Warren also pitches with an 0-2 record and 8.62 ERA in two starts.
Mavs Dig the Long Ball
The Mavericks have hit 14 home runs through 10 games after hitting just 18 home runs all of last season. UNO crushed 12 homers in the first five games at the UNCW Beach Blast, and Allie Mathewson and Amber Lutmer each hit their fifth of the season to bring the total to 14 after the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. The Mavs lead The Summit League in homers and didn't reach 14 home runs last year until April 11.
Lutmer Climbing Home Run Chart
Junior slugger Amber Lutmer is making her mark on the all-time home run chart in UNO history. Lutmer has 27 home runs to rank tied for fifth in school history. She is just one away from moving into a tie for third. The school record holder is Leslie Svoboda with 44 home runs from 2005-08.
Redding on the Basepaths
Senior outfielder Lindsay Redding has 35 career stolen bases to rank tied for 14th in school history. Redding won't surpass the school record of 113 set by Toni Novak from 1994-97, but she is just six steals away from reaching the top 10 and 22 away from the top five. Redding is 4-for-4 this season.
Lutmer Drives Them Home
Junior Amber Lutmer has been a run-producing machine so far in her UNO career. Lutmer has 101 career RBIs to rank 19th in school history. The school RBI record is 192, set by Leslie Svoboda from 2005-08. Lutmer had 43 RBIs last season and 42 in her freshman season, both of which led the Mavericks. With similar run production this season, Lutmer would find herself in the top 10 in school history after just three seasons.
Elsasser Picks Up Summit League Honors
Junior pitcher Dana Elsasser was named Summit League Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 11, the first weekly award of the season handed out. Elsasser led the Mavs to a perfect weekend at the UNCW Beach Blast with a 3-0 record and 0.78 ERA to earn her first Summit League award in the Mavs' first year in the conference. On the weekend, Elsasser struck out 10, while allowing five hits, two earned runs and one walk in 18 innings of work for a 0.78 ERA. She held her opponents to a .088 batting average.
Elsasser Back in Circle after Stellar Sophomore Season
Although just a junior, pitcher Dana Elsasser has already established herself as one of the all-time great pitchers in UNO history. Elsasser posted a 1.07 ERA as a sophomore in 2012, which ranked second among all Division I pitchers. Her 23 earned runs allowed were the fewest among any Division I starting pitcher who pitched at least 150.0 innings last season. Her career ERA of 1.04 ranks third in school history, and her career opponent batting average of .188 ranks second.
