The UNO softball team begins its 2013 season this weekend with five games at the UNCW Beach Blast in Wilmington, N.C. All five games will be played at Boseman Field. The Mavericks will take the field first against Iona on Friday at 10:30 a.m. (Central). They will then play host school UNC-Wilmington at 3:30 p.m. on Friday to wrap up their first day. On Saturday, the Mavs face Iona again, this time at 8 a.m. Immediately after they will face Detroit at 10:30 a.m. On Sunday, the Mavs conclude tournament play against Detroit at 8 a.m. Live stats will be available for all games at OMavs.com.
Series History
The Mavericks will be playing each opponent for the first time in school history.
Lutmer Back After Breakout Sophomore Season in 2012
Amber Lutmer returns as the Mavs' top hitter after posting solid numbers in her sophomore campaign. Lutmer hit .333 last season with a team-high 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. The junior also recorded a .685 slugging percentage and .456 on-base percentage, both team bests. Lutmer served as the designated player most of last season but will compete for time at first base and catcher this season.
Five Starters Back for the Mavericks
In addition to Lutmer, four other starting hitters from last year return for Omaha this season. In addition to Lutmer, outfielder Lindsay Redding returns after hitting .309. Molly Negrete (3B) and Tonya Peterson (SS) were also both everyday starters for the Mavs last year, and Mara Eeman started 37 games in the outfield as a freshman.
Mavs Return Entire Pitching Staff; Add Depth
All three of UNO's pitchers from last season are back, as well as one newcomer. Junior Dana Elsasser returns as the Mavs' ace. Elsasser recorded a 13-9 record and a 1.07 ERA and was named Great West Conference Pitcher of the Year. Sophomore Kat Barrow (9-7, 1.62 ERA) and senior Ashton Hughes (2-2, 4.47 ERA) are also back this season. Freshman Kayla Wyatt (RHP, 5-11, Purcell, Okla.) adds some height to the pitching staff.
Mathewson A Welcome Addition
The Mavericks got some good news in the offseason when Creighton standout Allie Mathewson decided to transfer to UNO after playing one season with the Bluejays. As a freshman, Mathewson hit .339 while starting all 54 games in the outfield or at first base. She earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Second-Team honors after hitting five home runs and seven doubles while scoring a team-high 44 runs. She also stole a team-best 13 bases in 16 attempts.
Up Next
The Mavericks head to Denton, Texas next weekend for the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. The Mavericks will again play five games in three days - two against Dayton and one each against North Texas, Oklahoma State and Iowa. UNO begins the tournament on Friday, Feb. 15 at 11:30 a.m. against Dayton.
Scouting Iona
The Gaels return eight letterwinners and five position starters from last year's squad that went 35-26 and won the MAAC conference tournament and regular-season title with a 12-4 record. The Gaels were eliminated in two games at the NCAA Regional in Berkeley, Calif., falling to No. 1 California and Boston. Eileen McCann leads the returnees with a .331 average last season and seven home runs and 16 RBIs. Jodi Petersen started all 61 games and hit .290 last year with three home runs and 15 stolen bases. Iona returns just one pitcher, Carly Argyle, who went 1-2 in six appearances with a 3.32 ERA. Only one of her six appearances was a start, as she mostly worked in relief. The Gaels have a first-year head coach in Melissa Inouye.
Scouting UNC-Wilmington
The Seahawks have 10 letterwinners and seven starters back from last year's team that went 9-45 overall and 4-17 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Senior Lauryn Buckworth is the top returning hitter with a .280 average last season and two home runs to go with 11 RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Casey Rowland is the top returning pitcher for the Seahawks. Rowland was the No. 2 pitcher last year with a 4.21 ERA and a 1-22 record. The Seahawks have 10 newcomers on their roster this season and a new head coach, Kristy Norton.
Scouting Detroit
The Titans have 11 letterwinners and six starters returning from last year's 10-40 squad. Detroit went 2-19 in the Horizon League last season and finished ninth. Junior first baseman/designated player Sara Cupp led the Titans last year with a .287 average and nine home runs to go with 33 RBIs. All three pitchers from last season are back, led by Karyn McCarty, who started a team-high 22 games and posted a 3-18 record and 5.61 ERA. Julia Maksym went 5-13 with a 5.16 ERA last year. Liz Young is in her first year as the head coach at Detroit.
Elsasser Back in Circle as Maverick Ace
Although just a junior, pitcher Dana Elsasser has already established herself as one of the all-time great pitchers in UNO history. Elsasser posted a 1.07 ERA as a sophomore in 2012, which ranked second among all Division I pitchers. Her 23 earned runs allowed were the fewest among any Division I starting pitcher who pitched at least 150.0 innings last season. Elsasser's career ERA entering the 2013 season stands at 1.10, which ranks fourth all-time in school history. Her career opponent batting average is .195, which ranks second, and she has thrown 12 shutouts in her career, tied for 13th all-time at UNO. The school record is 45, set by Amy Boyd from 1990-93.
Lutmer Climbing Home Run Chart
Junior slugger Amber Lutmer is making her mark on the all-time home run chart in UNO history. Lutmer has 22 home runs to rank eighth in school history. She is just three away from moving into seventh place. The school record holder is Leslie Svoboda with 34 home runs from 2005-07.
Lutmer Drives Them Home
Junior Amber Lutmer has been a run-producing machine so far in her UNO career. Lutmer has 85 career RBIs to rank 25th in school history. The school record is 158, set by Holly Voss from 1994-97. Lutmer had 43 RBIs last season and 42 in her freshman season, both of which led the Mavericks. With similar run production this season, Lutmer would find herself in the top 10 in school history after just three seasons.
Redding on the Basepaths
Senior outfielder Lindsay Redding has 31 career stolen bases to rank tied for 14th in school history. Redding won't surpass the school record of 113 set by Toni Novak from 1994-97, but she is just nine steals away from reaching the top 10 and 19 away from the top five. Last season, Redding had 14 stolen bases in 17 attempts.
Negrete Steady in the Field
Senior third baseman Molly Negrete ranks tied for eighth in school history with 14 career double plays turned. Although she started every game at the hot corner last year, Negrete posted a .964 fielding percentage, committing just six errors all season, fewest by a Maverick third baseman since 2009.
Welcome to The Summit League
The UNO softball team begins its first season in The Summit League in 2013 after a 24-18 record last year in its first Division I season. The Mavs were a one-year member of the Great West Conference last year with Houston Baptist, North Dakota and Utah Valley. UNO went 3-3 in conference games and finished third at the conference tournament. The Mavericks begin Summit League competition on March 15 with a home doubleheader against North Dakota State. Each Summit League series is three games with a doubleheader scheduled for the first day of each series. The Mavs will play one series against all eight opponents for 24 conference games.
Schedule Glance
The schedule has UNO on the road for the first month of the season, as the Mavs make tournament trips to North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Colorado and Tennessee. UNO will again play a two-game home and home series with Nebraska. The Mavs host Nebraska in their home opener on March 12 and travel to Lincoln on March 19. In addition to a three-game series with each Summit League team, the Mavs will also play non-conference series against North Dakota at home and on the road at Drake. “We are excited about the opportunity to begin playing a full Summit League schedule this year,” Head Coach Jeanne Scarpello said. “We have a lot of great players returning and are excited about our new players as well. We hope to see some of them contributing from day one.”
Mavs Picked Fifth in Summit League Poll
The Mavs were picked to finish fifth out of nine teams in The Summit League Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's nine head coaches. The Mavericks, newcomers to The Summit League this season, received 38 points in the poll. Four-time defending champion North Dakota State was picked to win the league again this season with 64 points and eight first-place votes. Fort Wayne tallied 56 points and received the other first-place vote, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Western Illinois came in third with 46 points, while Kansas City came in fourth with 40 points to barely edge the Mavericks. Following UNO in sixth was South Dakota (28), with IUPUI (26), South Dakota State (17) and Oakland (9) rounding out the poll. The top four teams in the regular season standings, excluding the Mavericks, will compete for The Summit League Softball Championship at the Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D., May 9-11. The tournament champion earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament.
Seven Freshmen Join Mavs in 2013
Coach Scarpello signed seven recruits to national letters of intent to join the Mavericks in the 2012-13 school year. UNO also picked up Creighton transfer Allie Mathewson as the eighth newcomer. All seven of the Maverick signees are high school seniors, representing Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. The Mavs picked up four signees from their home state. Tania Carroll and Bailey Schulenberg, state champion teammates at Lincoln Southwest, will bring their all-state credentials to the Maverick outfield. Sydney Hames, an all-state product of Bennington, will join the Mavericks, as will Yutan native Tara Trede, who broke numerous school records at Bishop Neumann High School. UNO also picked up three out-of-state recruits. Kansas City, Kan., native Jesslyn Buie was a standout hitter and starting pitcher at Saint James Academy, and she will join fellow Kansan Campbell Ditto, of Wamego, who was homeschooled through high school but brings an impressive resume of athletic accomplishments. The final member of the class is Kayla Wyatt, a pitcher from Purcell, Okla.
