WICHITA, Kan. – The Omaha baseball team played its second contest of a three-game weekend series against Iowa on Sunday, falling 4-1 at Eck Stadium. The Mavericks are now 3-8 (0-0 Summit League), while the Hawkeyes improve to 8-7 (0-0 Big Ten).

Matt Dermody (4-0) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits over 7.1 innings while striking out eight and allowing one walk. Junior Steven Schoonover (1-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on six hits with one strikeout over 3.0 innings. Taylor Kaufman earned his first save of the season, holding the Mavericks to one hit over 1.2 innings of work.

Senior Tyler Splichal finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while redshirt freshman Connor Messinger went 2-for-4.

Freshman Alex Schultz, who went 1-for-3, scored Omaha's only run of the game on redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor's RBI groundout in the eighth inning.

Iowa was led by Keith Brand, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Nick Day, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when the Hawkeyes plated three runs on four hits. Anthony Torres and Day tallied back-to-back singles, and Torres scored when Eric Toole reached on a fielder's choice on his sacrifice bunt. Jake Yacinich then singled to short, and Brand singled through the right side, allowing both Day and Toole to cross for a 3-0 Iowa lead.

After UNO put up a run in the eighth, the Hawkeyes added one more in the bottom of the frame. Blake Hickman drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on Taylor Zeutenhorst's single up the middle, then came in when Torres grounded into a double play, pushing the final score to 4-1.
