SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Omaha baseball team continue its run at the UTSA Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-2 to Stephen F. Austin at Wolff Stadium. The Mavericks are now 0-2 on the season, while the Lumberjacks improve to 3-5.
Kyle Cross (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Senior Cory Buckley (0-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work. Buckley struck out one and issued no walks.
Junior Brett Bass had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with one walk, while freshman Cole Gruber went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman Sam Murphy also made his collegiate debut, tallying a single and scoring a run in his pinch hitting appearance.
Stephen F. Austin was led by Max Lamantia, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a home run, as well as Jordan Camel, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Zach Benson and Joseph Olson also had a pair of hits each, with Olson scoring twice and Benson sending out a two-run homer. The Lumberjacks finished with 15 hits on the day.
SFA got on the board with two runs in the top of the second, then added another four in the top of the fourth.
Omaha plated its first run in the bottom of the fourth. The Mavericks loaded the bases with an infield single from Gruber, a bunt single from senior Ryan Keele and sophomore Alex Mortensen's hit-by-pitch. With one out, Gruber scored on a sacrifice fly to left from Palensky, making it 6-1.
The Lumberjacks put up two more runs in the top of the fifth and another in the ninth, pushing the score to 9-1. UNO tallied its final run in the bottom of the inning, with Murphy singling in his first career at-bat and later crossing the plate as freshman Collin Leif was plunked with a pitch for the final score of 9-2.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, March 3, facing Penn State for the final game of the UTSA Classic. First pitch is set for Noon at Wolff Stadium, and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
