This Week
The Omaha men's golf team will play in its second event of the week when it takes part in the Beu Mussatto Invitational hosted by Summit League neighbor Western Illinois. The Mavericks and 13 other schools will play 36 holes on Friday, March 29 beginning at 7:30 a.m. and finish with 18 holes on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
In Case You Missed It
The Omaha men's golf team finished in 11th place at the First Tee Classic hosted by Arkansas Little Rock on Tuesday at Chenal Country Club. The Mavericks finished with a three-round score of 974. Southeastern Louisiana won the event with a team score of 912 followed by Stephen F. Austin at 917 and host Arkansas Little Rock at 921.
Karl Krieser posted a score of 234, 18-over-par, to lead the Mavericks in scoring. He finished in a tie for 23rd overall. Alex Overfelt was second for the Mavs and finished in a tie for 32nd overall with a 54-hole score of 237.
Mitch Ryan posted a three-round score of 244 to finish in a tie for 48th. Taylor Sidzyik posted a two-day total of 261, fourth for UNO and 63rd overall. Alex Holtan finished at 266.
Michael Shukis, who missed the first two rounds due to illness, played in the final round and shot 81.
Men's Marks
Through eight tournaments, including two this spring, sophomore Karl Krieser leads the Mavericks in scoring with a stroke average of 77, followed closely by Alex Overfelt who is second at 77.4. Mitch Johnson and Michael Shukis are close behind at 3-4 in scoring with stroke averages of 78.4 and 78.5 respectively.
Krieser owns four of the top five 18-hole rounds shot by the Mavericks this year including a team-best 71 in the first round of the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational on Oct. 22. He also has three rounds of 72 while Overfelt also has a round of 72.
Waiting for the Weather
The Omaha women's golf team was denied a chance to start the spring half of its season when snow and ice cancelled their first event of the spring, the Sauki Invitational at Southern Illinois, on March 24 and 25. The Mavericks' next scheduled event is the Kangaroo Invitational hosted by Summit League foe Kansas City on Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9.
Newcomer Sophie Peters led the Mavs in scoring during the fall with a stroke average of 82, just ahead of senior Elizabeth Havekost at 82.6. Freshman Katie Kesti is third in scoring for the Mavs with an average of 82.9. Peters has shot seven of UNO's top eight 18-hole rounds this season including a team best 73 in the first round of the Payne Stewart Memorial on Oct. 15. She also had a 74 in the third round of the same tournament.
Next Up for the Mavs
Following their appearance at Western Illinois this weekend, the men's team will not play again until the Summit League Championship on April 22-24 in Keller, Texas. The women will play next at the aforementioned Kangaroo Invitational on April 8-9.
