OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team hosted North Dakota in a home-opening doubleheader on Friday, falling 5-3 and 2-0 at Westside High School. The Mavericks are now 0-6 (0-0 Summit League) on the year, while UND improves to 7-3-1 (0-0 Great West).

GAME 1 -- NORTH DAKOTA 5, OMAHA 3
Andrew Thome earned the win in game one, throwing six innings, and allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Senior Matt Tew (0-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk over four innings of work. For the day, Tew struck out a season-high five batters. Patrick Riewer added a save for UND, his first of the year.

Sophomore Alex Mortensen led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in another. Redshirt freshman Connor Messinger also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Jacob Threlkeld and Ryan Reese each notched a pair of hits for North Dakota, while Kris Kwak scored twice, and Jeff Campbell went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

UND took a 3-0 lead in the third, then made it 4-0 in the fourth. Omaha plated its first run in the bottom of the frame as Mortensen drew a leadoff walk and later came in when junior Dylan Casey grounded into a double play to push it to 4-1.

North Dakota tacked on another run in the top of the seventh before UNO put up two scores in the bottom of the inning. The Mavericks strung together doubles from Messinger, Mortensen and freshman Cole Gruber, making it 5-3 for the final tally.

GAME 2 -- NORTH DAKOTA 2, OMAHA 0
Taylor Petersen paced UND in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with a solo homer in the top of the second. Both teams then stayed scoreless until the eighth, when North Dakota added one more run Kwak's RBI double to right center to score Riewer from first.

Reid Jungling (1-0) nabbed the win on the mound, allowing just two hits over seven scoreless innings. Senior Cory Buckley took the loss, giving up one run on two hits over a three-inning outing. Buckley walked five but also fanned five batters for a season-high strikeout total.

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, March 9, hosting North Dakota for the third and final game of the weekend series. First pitch is set for Noon at Westside High School, and links to live stats and live audio will be available on OMavs.com.
