MACOMB, Ill. -- The Omaha baseball team picked up its fifth straight win on Friday afternoon, defeating Western Illinois, 11-6, in 10 innings at Boyer Stadium. With the win, the league-leading Mavericks improved to 11-15 (5-0 Summit League), while the Leathernecks dropped to 7-22 (1-4 Summit League).
Senior Cory Buckley led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and another driven in. Junior Brett Bass, sophomore Alex Mortensen, senior Ryan Keele, redshirt freshman Connor Messinger and freshman Cole Gruber each tallied two hits, contributing to Omaha's 14 hits for the day, and Messinger and Bass each scored twice as well.
Western Illinois was led by Steve Kedroski, JP Maestas, Neil DeCook and Matt Risdon, all of whom keyed two hits, while Brent Turner and Manny Reyes both scored twice, and Zack Burling had two RBI.
The win went to junior reliever Anthony Falcone (2-0), who threw 4.0 scoreless innings while giving up three hits and one walk and striking out two. The loss went to Mason Pingel (1-3), who surrendered seven runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk over 0.2 innings of work in the 10th. Omaha starter Tyler Fox went 5.0 innings in his outing, allowing four runs (three earned) off eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
With WIU leading 4-3 with one out in the top of the ninth, Keele reached on an error and advanced on a Splichal groundout. Buckley delivered an RBI single up the middle -- his third hit of the day -- to score Keele and tie the game at 4-4.
In the top of the 10th, Omaha unraveled the tie by capitalizing on four Leatherneck errors and put up four hits to explode for seven runs. Messinger led off and was hit by a pitch, advancing to second on Gruber's sacrifice bunt and going to third on a single through the right side from junior Caleb Palensky. Redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor walked to load the bases, and Bass reached on a fielder's choice to score Messinger and go ahead 5-4. Mortensen then singled down the left field line and Keele singled up the middle, plating Taylor. Senior Tyler Splichal reached on a fielding error, and Mortensen and Bass scored on a throwing error on the same play.
Next up, Buckley reached base on another fielding error, which allowed Keele to cross the plate. Messinger reached on another error, which scored Splichal, and following a pitching change, Gruber added an RBI double down the left field line that plated Buckley for the Mavs' seventh and final run of the inning for a score of 11-4.
The bottom of the inning saw Western come back for two runs on one hit, but it was not enough to rally past the Mavericks, who took a 11-6 win for their fifth consecutive conference victory and maintained their spot at first place in the Summit League.
