WICHITA, Kan. - The Omaha track & field team set several personal bests in spite of adverse conditions on day two of the KT Woodman Classic at Wichita State on Saturday.
Nearly all times and distances in the sprints and jumps did not register as personal bests because they were wind-aided.
Wind didn't slow sophomore Lauren Psota who led three Mavericks to a top-eight finish in the 800 meters. Psota ran a personal best of 2:15.22, eclipsing her previous PR by almost five seconds, to finish second. She edged teammate Katarina Zarudnaya who finished third at 2:15.55. Amanda Vorthmann was fifth with a personal best time of 2:18.80.
In the throwing events which are not subject to wind rules, Lianne McNaughton posted the fourth best distance in the hammer throw in school history, throwing 157-05 which was good for fourth place. In the process, she shattered her previous personal best by almost 25 feet. Liz Thompson also hit a new PR in the hammer with a distance of 136-06.
The Mavericks also had two in the top eight in the long jump. Sami Spenner took third with a wind-aided mark of 20-01 1/2 while Kathie-Lee Laidley was fifth at 19-05 1/2, also a wind-aided mark.
Spenner also finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-06.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Madeline Glesinger was seventh in a time of 1:05.82, shy of her personal best by just .2 seconds.
The Mavericks will take part in four events, including three in California, beginning next Wednesday.
