INDIANOLA, Iowa - Katarina Zarudnaya ran the third-fastest 1,500 meter time in school history, the highlight to another hectic week for the Omaha track & field team.
The Mavericks competed at both the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College over the weekend.
At Drake, only two athletes competed. Sami Spenner took sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 40-07. The distance would have broken her own school record, but it was not wind legal.
Amanda Vorthmann also ran in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, finishing 20th in a time of 10:57.41, her first time under 11 minutes this year and just 13 seconds off her own school record.
On Friday, Zarudnaya flirted with the school record, finishing second in a time of 4:31.06, less than two seconds off the mark set by Linda Elsasser in 1985. The only other Maverick to run faster in the 1,500 was All-American Anja Puc in 2010. Zarudnaya's time also broke the meet record.
Vorthmann lowered her season best time in the 1,500 meters to 4:40.36, good for seventh.
Spenner won the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.91, the first time she had run the race. Maja Mihalinec was right behind with a time of 11.97.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Nicole Behm was fourth in a time of 11:31.54 while Karo Garcia set a personal best with a time of 12:05.10, good for ninth.
Kathie-Lee Laidley had her season-best wind-legal time in the 100 meter hurdles, running a time of 14.63 to finish ninth.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Madeline Glesinger took third in a time of 1:05.90, just off her personal best.
Terri Armstrong was second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.42, edged out by Iowa State's Jessica Nichols at 25.16.
The Mavs' team of Armstrong, Spenner, Laidley and Mihalinec won the 4 x 100 relay in a time of 46.30.
In the field, Spenner set a meet record in winning the long jump with a leap of 19-11. Laidley had her own meet record in the high jump with a mark of 5-07 3/4.
The Mavericks are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Lincoln for the Nebraska Open, their last meet before the Summit League indoor championship.
