AZUSA, Calif. - Junior Sami Spenner set a new school record in winning the heptathlon at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday afternoon.

Spenner posted a score of 5,806 to break the previous record set by Anastasia Kyvelidou in 2005. In so doing, she edged San Diego State's Nicole Oudenaarden by just 32 points, edging her rival in the final event of the day.

Spenner began the day in second place but took over the lead with a mark of 20-09 3/4 in the long jump. She fell back to second following the javelin when she threw for 117-10, well behind Oudenaarden's throw of 146-05.

But needing to beat Oudenaarden in the 800 meters to win the heptathlon, Spenner ran a personal best time of 2:14.90 to do just that.

Spenner's score also qualifies her to compete in the USA Track & Field outdoor championships at the end of the season. She set the school record in the pentathlon at the USA Track & Field indoor championship in March.
