ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Omaha baseball team mounted a comeback in the eighth inning on Saturday, taking a 7-2 road victory over Oakland at OU Baseball Field. With the win, the conference-leading Mavericks improved to 22-21 (15-5 Summit League), while the Golden Grizzlies dropped to 15-32 (10-12 Summit League).
Junior Caleb Palensky finished with three hits on the day, while senior Ryan Keele was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and his conference-best fifth home run of the season. Senior Cory Buckley added another pair of hits with a run and an RBI, and freshman Alex Schultz was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two more driven in.
Sophomore Zach Williamsen (3-1) earned the win, throwing 7.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. OU's Jake Paulson (2-8) took the loss, also tossing 7.1 innings and surrendering six runs (two earned) off eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third before the Mavericks tied it at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. The Golden Grizzlies added another run in the sixth for a 2-1 score that held until the top of the eighth.
Sophomore Mortensen led off the inning with a single to left, and Buckley reached on a fielder error to put runners on the corners. Keele singled up the middle to score Mortensen and tie the game at 2-2. Redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor then reached on a fielder's choice, and Keele and Buckley advanced to second and third, respectively, on a muffed throw. A sacrifice fly to right from senior Tyler Splichal allowed Buckley to come across, giving Omaha the 3-2 lead. Schultz immediately sent a two-run double to right, plating Taylor and Keele, which made it 5-2. An infield single by Palensky put runners on first and third, and freshman Cole Gruber singled in Schultz with a hit to center that pushed UNO's lead to 6-2 with five runs on five hits and two OU errors.
Omaha added an insurance run in the ninth, as Keele led off with a solo homer to right, his second of the weekend and fifth of the year. Moving to the bottom of the ninth, senior Derek Landis entered the game in relief and got a pair of strikeouts, and OU's Brett Impemba grounded out to end the game with a final score of 7-2.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, May 14, hosting Western Illinois for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and links to live stats and audio will be available at OMavs.com.
