Mathewson Named to NFCA All-Region First Team

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO center fielder Allie Mathewson was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region First Team by member coaches. Mathewson, the only Summit League player selected to a first team, is now eligible for selection to one of three All-American teams, which will be announced on May 29.
Mathewson is the first Maverick to be selected to the NFCA All-Region First Team since 2011 and the 60th all-region first-team pick in UNO history. However, she is the first honoree since the Mavericks began their Division I transition prior to the 2012 season. Last week, Mathewson earned All-Summit League First Team and College Sports Madness All-Summit League First Team honors.
A sophomore transfer from Papillion, Neb., Mathewson led the Mavericks to a 36-7 (14-3 Summit) record in their second year in Division I, the second-best winning percentage in school history. She posted a team-high .395 average in her first year at UNO. Serving as the Mavs' leadoff hitter every game, Mathewson brought power to the top of the batting order with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs to rank second on the team in both categories. Not since 2008 has a Maverick hit at least .395 with double-digit homers (Leslie Svoboda, .427, 10 home runs). Mathewson is also the first leadoff hitter in school history to hit double-digit home runs.
In addition to her power, Mathewson scored a team-high 44 runs (second in Summit League), had 60 hits (second in Summit League) and tied for second nationally with seven triples in the regular season. Her seven triples tied for fifth in school history, and no Maverick before Mathewson had ever hit double-digit homers with at least seven triples.
Mathewson also had nine doubles and recorded a Summit League-best .763 slugging percentage. She was perfect defensively in center field for the Mavs and stole 10 bases in 11 attempts. She ranked third in the league in batting average (.395) and fifth in on-base percentage (.459).
The smallest player on the team at 5-3, Mathewson shot out of the gate in the 2013 season with a dazzling power display, hitting a leadoff home run in the first inning of each of the Mavs' first three games of the season, the first time in school history such a feat has occurred. She finished the opening UNCW Beach Blast tournament with four home runs.
For the season, Mathewson led the Mavs with 20 multi-hit games, including four three-hit performances and two multi-homer games. She also put together a team-best 11-game hitting streak to finish the season.
