The UNO softball team concludes its season this weekend with its final conference series at Oakland. The Mavs and Golden Grizzlies will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. (CT) on Friday and will finish with an 11 a.m. (CT) game on Saturday. UNO is not eligible for the conference tournament until 2015-16, so the Mavericks' season will end despite sitting in second place in the standings with a 12-2 record in The Summit League. UNO will be meeting Oakland for the first time.
The Teams
The Mavs enter the week with a 34-6 overall record and 12-2 mark in Summit League play. UNO has won all five of its conference series and has swept three. The Mavs' two conference losses (to Kansas City and Western Illinois) both came in the series finale after the Mavs took the first two games of the series. The Mavs need a minor miracle to win The Summit League regular season title. UNO would need to sweep Oakland and have unbeaten North Dakota State (15-0) be swept at home by South Dakota (11-5). However the Bison, winners of The Summit League the past four years, don't appear to be in any position to lose three straight games after winning their last 15. With one win at OU, the Mavs will clinch at least second place.
Oakland enters its final regular-season series with a 6-21-1 overall record and 1-13 mark in The Summit League. Despite being swept by Summit League leader North Dakota State last weekend, the Golden Grizzlies were competitive against the unbeaten Bison, falling 1-0 and 2-0 in the final games of the series.
Game No. 2,000
The Mavericks will be playing the 2,000th game in program history when they take the field against Oakland in game one of Friday's doubleheader. UNO has an all-time record of 1,390-604-5 for an all-time winning percentage of .697 in 1,999 games. The Mavs' 2,000th game of the season would have occurred much earlier this season if not for 11 canceled games.
Rain, Rain, Go Away
If all three games of this weekend's series go on as planned, the Mavs will finish the season having played 43 games, one more than last year but the second lowest total since 1988. Eleven games have been canceled this season with 10 of them being home games. However, the Mavs will finish with single-digit losses for the first time since their 2001 Division II national championship season, when UNO went 54-6. The Mavs' current .850 winning percentage is the second-best in school history, behind only the 2001 team (.900).
Last Time Out
UNO won its fifth Summit League series in as many tries over the weekend, taking two of three games from Western Illinois at Westside Field at Westbrook. The Mavs won the first two games on Saturday, 4-0 and 6-4, but fell victim to a Leatherneck comeback in the series finale, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in the capper on Sunday. Amber Lutmer had two home runs on Saturday and has reached base in 30 straight games.

It would take a sweep this weekend, but UNO head coach Jeanne Scarpello is only three wins away from her 600th career win. Scarpello has an all-time record of 597-187-1 (.761) in her 14th year as the head coach of the Mavs. The all-time winningest coach in UNO history, Scarpello has assembled one of her best squads in her 14 years at UNO in 2013, although the Mavs won't get a chance to compete in the postseason because of their transition to Division I. The Mavs' 34-6 record and .850 winning percentage is the second-best in school history, behind only Scarpello's 2001 Division II national championship team that went 54-6.
