FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Omaha baseball team kicked off a weekend series at Fort Wayne on Friday, falling 6-2 at Mastodon Field. The Mavericks are now 16-19 (10-3 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 19-21 (7-10 Summit League).
Junior Caleb Palensky finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore Alex Mortensen was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Cory Buckley went 1-for-3, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games.
Fort Wayne was led by Brandon Soat, who went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Kristian Gayday added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI, and Steve Lowden was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Jason Kalber (2-5) earned the win with a complete-game performance, allowing two runs (one earned) off seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. The loss went to freshman Tyler Fox (4-2), who threw 5.0 innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on three hits. Fox struck out four and walked three. Freshman Sam Murphy and sophomore Sam Raetz combined for three innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits.
Down 4-0, Omaha got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Gruber led off by reaching on a fielding error, followed by a bunt single from Palensky. A sacrifice bunt by redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor put both runners in scoring position, and junior Brett Bass singled through the left side to score Gruber. Mortensen then singled to center, plating Palensky and making it 4-2.
Fort Wayne countered with a pair of runs in the sixth, as Lowden came in on Kevin Wirth's RBI single, and Soat scored on a wild pitch, bringing the final tally to 6-2.
