FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A double shutout day resulted in a conference doubleheader sweep for the Omaha baseball team, which defeated Fort Wayne, 2-0 and 9-0, on Saturday at Mastodon Field. With the wins, the Mavericks improve to 18-19 (12-3 Summit League), while the Mastodons drop to 19-23 (7-12 Summit League).
Senior Matt Tew struck out a career-high nine batters in game one, while junior Steven Schoonover threw a complete game with a career-best four strikeouts in the second tilt. Omaha's offense was also potent in the second game, totaling 16 hits, led by a 5-for-5 day from senior Ryan Keele and a 3-for-3 showing from sophomore Alex Mortensen.
GAME 1 – OMAHA 2, FORT WAYNE 0
Tew (3-5) earned the win in the opening game, striking out a career-high-tying nine batters over 6.0 innings with six singles surrendered. The loss went to Chuck Weaver (2-4), who threw 7.0 innings for a complete game and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts. Senior Derek Landis picked up his fifth save of the year.
No Maverick tallied more than one hit, but Keele and redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor both doubled and had an RBI, and senior Cory Buckley tripled to finish 1-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Tyler Splichal posted Omaha's other run.
Tyler Shepherd went 3-for-3 for Fort Wayne, and Evan Van Sumeren finished 2-for-3.
One run in the second inning and another in the third proved all UNO needed offensively. In the second inning, Taylor doubled down the right field line to score Splichal. Buckley tripled to right center with two outs in the third inning, followed by Keele's double down the left field line that put up UNO's second and final run for a score of 2-0.
GAME 2 – OMAHA 9, FORT WAYNE 0
In game two, the Maverick offense exploded for 16 hits while holding IPFW to just six hits as a team. Keele led the charge with a career-best 5-for-5 effort with three RBI, while Mortensen finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored. Buckley also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and another driven in, and junior Brett Bass was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Schoonover (3-2) starred on the mound, throwing the first complete game of his career with a career-long 9.0-inning outing. He scattered six hits – all singles – and struck out a career-best four batters with no walks. IPFW's Brandon Pease (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Omaha scored in all but three frames, starting off with one run in the top of the first. Splichal singled in Bass, spotting the Mavericks a quick 1-0 lead. UNO added two more runs in the third, as freshman Marcus Ethen and Bass both singled, then moved into scoring position with Mortensen's sacrifice bunt. Buckley delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Ethen, and Keele came up with a double to left center that crossed Bass to push the score to 3-0.
UNO added another run in the fourth, with Schultz coming in on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Mortensen, Buckley and Keele singled consecutively, and a throwing error allowed two runs to come in to make it 6-0.
The seventh inning came with another pair of runs for Omaha, starting with singles from Mortensen, Buckley and Keele to load the bases. Splichal's sacrifice fly then allowed Mortensen to score, and Buckley later came in on a sacrifice fly by Palensky, pushing the score to 8-0. UNO tacked on another run in the eighth, as Keele posted his fifth hit with an RBI single to right that plated Mortensen, bringing the final score to 9-0.
