
Mavericks Take Opener at Oakland, 9-6

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Omaha baseball team opened its weekend series at Oakland on Thursday afternoon, dropping the Golden Grizzlies, 9-6, at OU Baseball Field. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 20-20 (13-4 Summit League) on the year, while Oakland falls to 14-30 (9-10 Summit League).
Junior Caleb Palensky led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored. Redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, while senior Tyler Splichal was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and another driven in. Freshman Alex Schultz chipped in another pair of hits and a run, and junior Brett Bass was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
OU was paced by Spencer Marentette, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Kyle Bobolts and Mike Brosseau each had two hits, and Bobolts also scored twice.
Freshman Tyler Fox (5-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Connor Mielock (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits while walking two over 3.0 innings of work. Reliever Mitch Kracl (1) earned his first career save with the last 3.0 innings, during which he allowed three runs (two earned) off five hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Oakland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Todd Dunham was hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored on Mike Carson's sacrifice fly to left. Omaha tied the game immediately in the top of the second, with Taylor coming in on Palensky's RBI single through the right side.
The Mavericks added four runs on three hits in the third. Sophomore Alex Mortensen was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk by senior Cory Buckley, and both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior Ryan Keele. Splichal then singled to center to score Mortensen, and Buckley crossed on Taylor's sacrifice fly to left. Schultz then singled to third, and Palensky sent a two-run triple down the right field line, plating Splichal and Schultz to make it 5-1.
In the fifth, UNO tallied three more runs on four hits. Splichal was hit by a pitch, and Taylor singled through the right side to start off the inning. A one-out single to right from Palensky brought in Splichal, and two batters later, Bass doubled to left center to score Palensky and Taylor to push the score to 8-1.
OU totaled two runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame, bringing the score to 8-3. The Mavericks came back with a run of the own in the sixth, with redshirt freshman Connor Messinger scoring on Taylor's sacrifice fly to left at 9-3. Oakland notched one run in the seventh, as Brosseau singled in Marentette from second to cut it to 9-4. The Golden Grizzlies managed two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short as Omaha earned the victory, 9-6.
The Omaha-Oakland series resumes on Friday, May 10 with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CT) at OU Baseball Field in Rochester, Mich., and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
