Mavs Down Houston Baptist in Season Opener, 3-1

HOUSTON, Texas – The Omaha volleyball team kicked off the 2013 season with a victory on Friday, securing a 3-1 win – 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 – over Houston Baptist at the Marriott Houston Westchase Classic at HBU's Sharp Gym.
Sophomore Kelley Wollak tallied a match-leading 14 kills with nine digs and two blocks. Sophomore Megan Schmale joined Wollak in double figures, totaling a career-high 12 kills on .600 hitting (12-for-20) with no errors, as well as a match-best seven blocks.
Sophomore setters Bailey Baxter and Michaela Schimmer each finished with a double-double and guided the Mavericks' to a .200 team hitting percentage to Houston Baptist's .059. Schimmer had 21 assists and 11 digs, while Baxter put up 19 assists and 10 digs.
Sophomore Kimberly Bailey's 28 digs led all players in the match, and freshman Kristy Wieser had 14 digs with three kills and three blocks in her Maverick debut. Sophomores and Amy Taylor and Diane Banderas also had strong efforts at the net with four stops apiece.
Omaha also outblocked the Huskies, 13-9.
UNO opened with a bang to take the first set 25-18, hitting .405 as a team with just two errors. Schmale spurred the effort with five kills and a .714 attack percentage.
In set two, HBU kept the Mavs to .077 hitting and took the game 25-21. But Omaha held the Huskies to a .000 attack percentage with 10 errors in the third game, winning 25-19.
HBU was limited to a -.026 performance with 12 errors in the fourth game, and the Mavericks broke a late 17-17 tie with the help of seven HBU miscues and blocks from Banderas, Wollak, Schimmer and junior Jessy Schroedter. UNO went on to take the set 25-19 and the match at 3-1.
With the win, Omaha moves to 1-0 on the season, while Houston Baptist drops to 0-1.
UNO returns to action at the Marriott Houston Westchase Classic on Saturday, Aug. 31, facing UT-Pan American at Noon and Louisiana at 5 p.m. Links to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
