Mavs Battle Grizzlies on Friday

The Omaha women's soccer team is set for its fourth home game in two weeks, as Montana visits for a 5 p.m. match at the UNO Soccer Field on Friday. Live stats will be available at OMavs.com. Friday's game will be the fourth home game in the Mavs' last five matches. UNO has just three non-conference matches remaining before Summit League play begins on Oct. 4.
The Teams
The Mavericks enter Friday's match against Montana with a 2-4 record, having won two of their last three games. Following a 2-0 shutout of North Dakota on Sept. 1, the Mavs came from behind with two goals in the final seven minutes for a 2-1 win at Northern Iowa last Friday. UNO is most recently coming off a 2-1 loss to Wyoming last Sunday at home. Senior forward Melanie McCormick leads the Mavericks with two goals and five points this season. Ava Doetsch, Katlyn Nimtz and Hannah Wampler each have one goal. Four different players - McCormick, Sarah Nordstrom, Kerry Pivovar and Anna Sibson - have assists this season. Meaghan Clark has made 25 saves and has a 2.00 goals against average.
The defending Big Sky regular-season champion, Montana has a 2-2-2 record entering Friday's match against Omaha. The Grizzlies also play at Creighton on Sunday as part of their Omaha road trip. Tyler Adair and Ashley Robertson lead the Griz with two goals each, while Mackenzie Akins has one goal and three assists to lead the squad with five points. Montana has six starters and 12 letterwinners back from last year's team that finished first in the Big Sky.

Last Time Out
The Mavs fought valiantly but saw their two-game win streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Wyoming last Sunday at the UNO Soccer Field. UNO dropped to 2-4 on the season, while Wyoming moved to 3-1-1. Olivia Mohtadi got Wyoming on the board in the 11th minute. Jennifer Paul dribbled down the center of the field and played a ball to Mohtadi on the left side behind the defense. Mohtadi finished to the low right corner for the 1-0 Cowgirl lead. Paul got into the scoring column herself in the 20th minute. Liz O'Reilly worked her way into the right side of the box and centered a ball to Paul, who calmly placed it into the middle of the net to make it 2-0. Hannah Wampler got the Mavs on the board in the 57th minute on a direct kick. Melanie McCormick was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Wampler took the kick and ripped it into the upper right corner to cut Wyoming's lead to 2-1. The Mavs spent most of the second half attacking and controlling the pace of the game, but couldn't get the equalizer to show for it. Wyoming outshot Omaha 11-7 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal, but the Mavs had four shots on goal in the second half to three for the Cowgirls.
Up Next
The Mavericks don't return to action until next Friday, Sept. 20, as they travel down the road to face Creighton at 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
Caniglia Field Status
The Mavericks continue to play their home matches at the UNO Soccer Field while the renovation of Caniglia Field continues. The Mavs' new home will seat 3,466 fans and will feature a state-of-the-art soccer pitch. The exact date of the first game on the new surface is not yet known, but both the men's and women's soccer programs are anticipating playing on their new field this season.
Halfway Through Division I Transition
The Mavericks have now completed two full years of their four-year transition to Division I and are therefore ineligible to compete in the conference tournament and NCAA Tournament until the 2015 season. The 2013-14 season will see UNO's teams going through a full Summit League schedule for the second time.
Senior Class Sets Tone
After having just one senior last year, the Mavericks have an entirely different make-up this season with six seniors on the roster. Not only are there six seniors, but all six have been at UNO since their freshman seasons in 2010. Monica Bosiljevac, Jordyn Braun, Melanie McCormick, Sarah Nordstrom, Kerry Pivovar and Logan Watts have combined for 279 starts entering the 2013 season.
Transfers Add to Mavericks' Depth
Among the Mavs' eight newcomers, three are no strangers to high-level Division I soccer. UNO welcomed aboard three transfers in the offseason - Chelsi Rohloff (Nebraska), Courtney Neville (Memphis) and Marquette Pick (Iowa State). All three are sophomores for the Mavs this season and will push for significant playing time. Rohloff, a Papillion native, played in five games as a freshman at Nebraska. Neville, an Oakdale, Minn., native, played in three games for Memphis as a freshman. Finally, Pick, an Omaha native, appeared in 18 matches for Iowa State and made one start.
Mavs Picked Sixth in Summit League Preseason Poll
The UNO women's soccer team came in sixth in the Summit League Preseason Poll. The Mavs collected 20 points from the league's head coaches to finish ahead of IUPUI and South Dakota, who tied for seventh with 10 points. Denver was picked as the league favorite and garnered the maximum seven first-place votes and 49 total points, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team, so Fort Wayne received the only other first-place vote and finished second with 39 points. Denver's selection comes as no surprise, as the Summit League newcomer advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season after compiling a 17-3-4 record. Denver is ranked No. 20 (TopDrawerSoccer.com) and No. 25 (NSCAA/Continental Tire) in the national preseason polls. Western Illinois (34), North Dakota State (32) and South Dakota State (30) were picked third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The Mavs went 3-15 overall last season and 3-5 in The Summit League but lost just one player from that squad, All-Summit League forward Danielle Archuleta.
