No. 19 Mavericks Back in Action at New Hampshire

OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 19 Omaha Mavericks return to the ice after nearly a month off when they face New Hampshire of Hockey East on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4. Friday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET, and Saturday's game starts at 7 p.m. ET from the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 8-7-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, good for second place. The Mavericks haven't played since a 4-2 loss and a 3-3 tie (2-1 SOW) at Colorado College on Dec. 6-7. The Mavs are 3-2-1 on the road this year. Omaha is 1-1-0 all-time against New Hampshire, but this is the team's first-ever trip to Durham.
New Hampshire is 10-10-1 overall this season and 5-5-0 in Hockey East, putting it in third place. The Wildcats returned to action following the Christmas break with a 4-2 loss to Cornell and a 3-2 win over Princeton at the Florida College Classic at Estero, Fla. on Dec. 28-29. UNH is 3-4-1 at home this season including a mark of 1-2-1 in non-conference games.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks came out of a week-long break with a 4-2 loss at Colorado College on Dec. 6. CC's Alexander Krushelnyski and UNO's Ian Brady exchanged powerplay goals in the first period, but the Tigers pumped home two even-strength goals in the second period to lead 3-1. The Mavs drew to within a goal when Zahn Raubenheimer scored at 7:25 of the third, but CC's Jeff Collett iced the game with a tally a little more than six minutes later. Ryan Massa suffered his first loss in six outings, making 24 saves in goal for UNO.
On Saturday, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Dominic Zombo scored on a power play in the second and Johnnie Searfoss tallied at 7:55 of the third to tie the game. Alex Roos gave CC the lead back when he scored at 11:19 of the period, but Josh Archibald replied just 1:26 later to knot the game. After a scoreless overtime, the Mavericks prevailed 2-1 in a shootout with Ryan Walters and Archibald both tallying. Massa played one period and was then relieved by Kirk Thompson who played through overtime and got credit for the tie with 17 saves. Massa returned for the shootout, stopping three of four attempts by the Tigers.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 344-190-50 (.632) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 82-75-17 (.520).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Dick Umile is in his 24th season guiding the fortunes of the Wildcats. The 1972 graduate of New Hamshire is 529-286-95 at his alma mater. He is assisted by Scott Borek and Jim Tortorella.
