Mavs Picked Second in Summit Preseason Poll

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha softball team has been picked second in the Summit League Preseason Poll released on Thursday.
The Mavericks received 31 total points, including one first-place vote, to finish two points behind North Dakota State, which has won the regular-season title two years in a row. The poll was voted on by the league's seven head coaches, and they could not vote for their own team.
The Bison received four first-place votes while Fort Wayne received two and finished third with 29 total points. South Dakota and Western Illinois tied for fourth with 18 points, while IUPUI (12) and South Dakota State (6) rounded out the poll in sixth and seventh, respectively.
The Mavs had the best overall record of any Summit League team last season at 36-7, the second-best overall winning percentage (.837) in Summit League history. UNO's 14-3 record in league play helped the Mavs to a second-place finish in the league standings behind NDSU (17-1). The series between the Mavs and Bison was canceled last season.
The Mavs welcome back four all-league members, including 2013 Summit League Freshman of the Year Campbell Ditto, along with Allie Mathewson, Amber Lutmer and ace Dana Elsasser. In all, the Mavs return seven position starters and two pitchers.
The Mavericks open the season next Friday, Feb. 7 at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah.
