The Omaha men's golf team concludes the fall half of its season with a trip east while the women's golf team stays close to home. The Maverick men are the ODU/Outerbanks Invitational hosted by Old Dominion on Sunday - Tuesday, Oct. 19-21 at the Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powells Point, N.C. The women stay in Omaha to finish their fall season, competing in the Creighton Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21 at the Oak Hills Country Club.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Men Compete in Nebraska Intercollegiate
Five members of the Omaha men's golf team played as individuals in the 2014 Nebraska Intercollegiate on Oct. 10-11 in Norfolk, Neb.
Senior Taylor Sidzyik had UNO's best score with rounds of 73 and 72 for a one-over-par total of 145 to finish fifth.
Ryan Mayer and Caleb Haight tied for 22nd with Mayer shooting a 79-75-154 total and Haight shooting 74 and 80 at the Norfolk Country Club.
Lucas Gervais tied for 43rd with rounds of 81 and 79 to finish at 160. He was just a stroke ahead of teammate Ryan Milks who shot 78-83-161.
Women Take 14th at Missouri State
The Omaha women's golf team finished in 14th place at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial which concluded on Oct. 14. The Mavericks finished with a score 963 over the 54-hole tournament at the Twin Oaks Country Club.
Freshman Megan Vetrovksy was UNO's top scorer for the tournament with a score of 230 to finish in a tie for 25th place in the field of 86 golfers. It's the third time in four tournaments that she has led the Mavericks in scoring.
Sophie Peters was second for the Mavericks and tied for 49th overall with a score of 238. Katie Kesti had a three-day total score of 243, good for a tie for 61st.
Makenna Kroeker finished at 258, good for 82nd, and Alexa Ruwe completed the scoring for UNO with a total score of 260, putting her in 83rd place.
Rankings
Krieser ranks sixth in the Summit League for scoring average at 74.2 through nine rounds this season, up from the 12th spot the previous week. He is the only Maverick ranked in the top 20. Denver's Petter Mikalsen leads the league with a stroke average of 71.6 in seven rounds.
As a team, the Maverick men rank sixth out of nine schools with a team 18-hole stroke average of 301.2.
On the women's side, Vetrovsky moved up to 13th in the league with a stroke average of 77.5 in 11 rounds. Oral Roberts' Alejandra Acosta leads the Summit League with a stroke average of 73.8 in nine rounds
As a team, the Mavs also moved up one spot to seventh in the Summit with an 18-hole average of 321.8 in 11 rounds.
