Omaha Softball Earns Top Team GPA Honor from NFCA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Omaha softball team has claimed top accolades among the nation's NCAA Division I programs in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 10 All-Academic Team rankings, released by the NFCA.
Head coach Jeanne Scarpello's Mavericks topped all eligible NCAA Division I teams with a 3.67 team grade point average compiled during the 2013-14 academic year. Following Omaha within Division I schools were Robert Morris University (3.61), Northern Colorado (3.588), Grand Canyon University (3.588), and Eastern Michigan (3.585).
"I am extremely proud of the academic success our softball student-athletes have achieved this season," said Scarpello, who is entering her 16th season at helm of the Omaha softball program. "An academic standard has been established here at Omaha and we will aim to maintain that highest standard throughout the years to come."
Last year, the Mavericks finished seventh in the nation with a 3.53 GPA.
In the other university/college divisions of this year's NFCA Top 10 All-Academic Team Rankings, Adelphi University for NCAA Division II (3.72); Emerson College for NCAA Division III (3.64); William Carey University for NAIA (3.70); and Eastern Mississippi Community College for NJCAA (3.59).
The Mavericks finished the 2014 season 33-16 overall and 12-6 in Summit League play, good enough for third in conference. Omaha was 8-5 at home and won 12 of their last 13 games.
The 2014-15 campaign marks the final year of UNO's mandatory four-year reclassification period to NCAA Division I. The Mavs will be eligible to compete in all postseason competitions in 2015-16.
