Mavericks Make First Trip To No. 18 Cornell

This Week
The Omaha Mavericks return to action following a week off with a non-conference series at No. 18 Cornell, the first in school history, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 - Nov. 1. Both games begin at 7 p.m. ET from Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 3-1-0 overall this season following two wins at Western Michigan on Oct. 17-18. Omaha is 2-0-0 in the NCHC this season, putting it in a tie with North Dakota for first. Omaha trails the all-time series with Cornell, 0-2-0, and is making its first-ever trip to Ithaca this weekend. The Mavericks are 2-0-0 on the road this season.
Cornell will be playing its first NCAA games this weekend. Last weekend, the Big Red began play with a 3-2 exhibition win over the USNTDP Under-18 team on Friday and a 3-2 exhibition win over Carleton of Canada the following night. Cornell was 17-10-5 overall last season and 11-7-4 in ECAC Hockey, good for fourth place. The Big Red was 8-5-2 last year at home.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks opened NCHC play with two wins over Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Oct. 17-18. On Friday, the Mavs got three first-period goals and never trailed in a 5-2 win. Justin Parizek scored just over six minute into the game and after the Broncos tied the game, Tanner Lane and Brian Cooper both scored to make it 3-1. Western Michigan drew to within a goal early in the second period, but Ian Brady scored a shorthanded goal late in the second and Jake Guentzel iced it with an empty netter in the third. Ryan Massa made 37 saves to earn the win.
The next night, the Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:34 of the first period on Guentzel's second goal of the weekend. Dominic Zombo stretched the advantage when he finished off a pass from Jono Davis during a 2-on-1 halfway through the second period. Zombo tallied again in the final minute of the third period, hitting the empty net for a 3-0 win. Massa again backstopped the win, making 18 saves as the Mavericks outshot the Broncos, 24-18.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 356-202-51 (.626) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 94-87-18 (.518).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Mike Schafer is in his 20th year as the head coach of the Big Red. The 1986 graduate of Cornell is 364-208-71 all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by Ben Syer and Topher Scott.
