Mavericks Close Season at GCU Invitational

The Omaha volleyball team completes the 2014 season this weekend, traveling to the GCU Invitational for four matches at Antelope Gymnasium in Phoenix, Ariz. The tournament begins on Friday, Nov. 21, when UNO faces NJIT at 10 a.m. (CT), followed by UMass Lowell at 5:30 p.m. (CT). On Saturday, Nov. 22, the Mavericks square off with Incarnate Word at 12:30 p.m. (CT), then close against host Grand Canyon at 8 p.m. (CT). Omaha's blocking corps has been outstanding during the 2014 season, and the statistics say it all. The Mavericks have outblocked their opponents a combined 255-181.5 and have tallied double-digit team blocks in 12 matches. As such, the Mavericks, who may not officially be listed in the NCAA Division I stats release, are unofficially ranked 57th in the country with 255 total blocks, and they are 77th nationally with 2.32 blocks per set. Individually, junior Megan Schmale is 81st among Division I blockers with 117 total blocks.
The Block Party: Summit League Style
Omaha claims four of the top 10 spots on the Summit League's individual blocking leaders list. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Amanda Conlin is third with 1.16 blocks per set, junior middle blocker Megan Schmale is fourth (1.06), junior setter/rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer is sixth (0.97) and junior middle blocker Diane Banderas is eighth (0.93). Schmale also ranks second in the conference with 110 block assists and 117 total blocks.
As a team, Omaha is second in the league with 448 block assists, 255 total blocks and 2.32 blocks per set.

Omaha put together a solid performance last Friday, defeating Western Illinois 3-0 (9-25, 20-25, 22-25) at Sapp Fieldhouse. Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey paced UNO with a season-high 15 kills on .324 hitting along with five digs. Freshman setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy notched her team-leading 17th double-double of the season with 30 assists and 13 digs. The Omaha Marian graduate added four assists, four service aces and a block.
Junior outside hitter Kelley Wollak narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. Junior libero Kimberly Bailey and freshman defensive specialist Marisa Moseman also had double-figure dig efforts, finishing with 10 and 13, respectively. Moseman's 13 digs tied her season best.
Senior middle blocker Jessy Schroedter and junior middle blocker Amy Taylor also chipped in six kills apiece, with Schroedter hitting .500 for the night. The match marked the final career match of Schroedter and her fellow senior, defensive specialist Rachelle Kruml.
The Mavericks outhit WIU, .275 to .093, and outdug the Leathernecks, 57-49. Western won the blocking battle, 5-2.
Mixed Schedule Takes Mavericks Around the Nation
Omaha's 2013 schedule includes 33 matches against 24 different opponents, and the team will have played in 11 states across the country. UNO has squared off with opponents from 10 different conferences. Two foes -- IUPUI and Iowa State were 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. The Jags were dropped 3-0 by Missouri in the first round, while the Cyclones lost 3-1 to Colorado in the first round.
Entering 2014, the Mavericks had never faced five of their 2014 opponents: Central Michigan, Tennessee, Canisius, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Boise State. Omaha currently holds a combined all-time record of 161-128-2 over all teams on the slate this season.
