The No. 13 Omaha Mavericks play their first home games in a month and a half when they welcome No. 8 Minnesota Duluth for games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21 and 22. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. from CenturyLink Center Omaha. These games also will be Omaha's first NCHC home games.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 6-1-1 overall this season following a sweep at Ohio State on Nov. 7-8. Omaha is 2-0-0 in the NCHC this season, putting it in fifth place. The Mavericks have played the fewest conference games in the NCHC. UNO trails the all-time series with UMD, 6-11-0, and is 4-5-0 vs. the Bulldogs all-time at home. The Mavericks are 1-1-0 at home this season.
Minnesota Duluth is 8-4-0 overall this season and 4-2-0 in the NCHC, putting it in a tie with Miami for first. The Bulldogs picked up a home-and-home sweep of previous No. 1 Minnesota last weekend, winning 3-0 in Minneapolis and then 2-1 back in Duluth. UMD is 5-0-0 on the road this season.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks finished a six-game road trip by beating Ohio State, 4-1 and 4-3, in Columbus. On Friday, Justin Parizek scored in the first period, and Brian Cooper tallied in the second to stake the Mavs to a 2-0 lead. OSU got a goal back early in the third, but Avery Peterson scored on the power play less than three minutes later, and Ian Brady added an empty netter to seal it. Ryan Massa made 25 saves.
The following night, the two teams combined for three goals in 1:57 of the first period as Peterson scored between two Buckeye tallies. Darik Angeli made it 3-1 for OSU at 16:11, but Peterson scored again at 17:57 to leave UNO down just one goal after one period. David Pope scored in the second period to tie the game, and Parizek notched the game winner just 1:53 into the third. Kirk Thompson stopped 27 shots for his first win of the year.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 359-202-52 (.628) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 97-87-19 (.525). He coached in his 200th game at UNO on Oct. 31 at Cornell.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Scott Sandelin is in his 15th season as head coach at Minnesota Duluth. Sandelin, a former assistant to Blais at North Dakota, is a 1986 graduate of UND and is 255-249-67 all-time at UMD. He is assisted by Jason Herter and Derek Plante.
