O'Shaughnessy, Horkey Named to All-Freshmen Team

OMAHA, Neb. – Two Omaha volleyball players – freshmen Mackenzie Horkey and Sydney O'Shaughnessy – were named to the 2014 Summit League All-Freshmen Team, it was announced Thursday.
Horkey, an outside hitter, and O'Shaughnessy, a setter, accounted for two spots on the seven-member All-Freshmen Team. They are the first two Mavericks in school history to earn the honor.
During regular-season play, O'Shaughnessy averaged 7.13 assists per game and played in all 29 matches. She added 2.80 digs and 0.32 service aces per game, ranking third in the league for total aces (35), fourth for aces per set (0.32) and seventh for total assists (784) and assists per set (7.13). A product of Omaha Marian, O'Shaughnessy led the Mavericks with 17 double-doubles. She had 12 matches with 30 or more assists this season, including a career-best 52 at South Dakota State on Oct. 19.
Horkey, who started all 29 matches, averaged 2.03 kills and 2.86 digs per game in her inaugural campaign. The Jordan, Minn., native ranked 12th in the league for total digs (315) and 13th for digs per set (2.86). Horkey had six double-doubles for the season and seven matches with double-figure kills, including a career-high 15 against Western Illinois on Nov. 15. Ranking second on the team for digs per set, Horkey had 20 double-figure dig performances, highlighted by a career-best 18 on two occasions.
Omaha is 11-18 (6-10 Summit League) after completing the conference slate last weekend. The Mavericks travel to Phoenix, Ariz., this weekend for four matches at the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon.
