The No. 11/13 Omaha Mavericks will pack their Thanksgiving turkey on the bus for a trip to No. 2 North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 7-2-1 overall this season and 3-1-0-0 in the NCHC this season, putting them in a tie with Denver for fourth place. They are coming off a split with No. 8 Minnesota Duluth last weekend, their first home games in six weeks. UNO trails the all-time series with UND, 5-7-0, but is 3-3-0 vs. North Dakota all-time in Grand Forks. The Mavericks are 5-0-1 on the road this season.
North Dakota is 9-3-1 overall and 4-2-0-0 in the NCHC this season, good for third place. UND is coming off a road split at St. Cloud State last weekend. The Huskies won, 3-1, in the opener before UND won, 3-2, the following night. Overall, North Dakota is 3-2-1 at home this season.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks dropped a 3-2 decision to Minnesota Duluth in the opener of their series last weekend before bouncing back for a 4-1 win the following night. On Friday, Justin Parizek scored a powerplay goal to open scoring in the second period, and David Pope followed just 1:27 later to stake UNO to the advantage. But UMD scored three goals in the final 10:40 of the third to win. Ryan Massa stopped 33 shots.
On Saturday, UMD opened the scoring with a goal from Kyle Osterberg just 4:40 into the game and was outshooting the Mavericks 12-0 before Tyler Vesel tied the game at 13:28 on UNO's first shot of the game. Austin Ortega then gave the Mavericks the lead for good just 2:27 later. Ortega set up Jake Guentzel for a goal late in the second period that boosted the UNO lead to 3-1, and Ortega then sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the last minute of the third. Massa turned aside 39 shots as UNO was outshot 40-18 for the game.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 360-203-52 (.628) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 98-88-19 (.524). He coached in his 200th game at UNO on Oct. 31 at Cornell.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Dave Hakstol is in his 11th season as head coach at North Dakota. Hakstol, a former assistant to Blais at North Dakota, is a 1996 graduate of UND and is 269-136-41 all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by two other former UND players, Brad Berry and Dane Jackson.
