Milwaukee Rallies Past Mavericks, 5-4

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Omaha baseball team opened the 2014 season on Friday, falling 5-4 to Milwaukee in its first game of the Snowbird Classic. The Mavericks are now 0-1 (0-0 Summit League), while the Panthers improve to 1-3 (0-0 Horizon League).
UWM's Cody Peterson (1-0) earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks over 5.0 innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Fox (0-1) took the loss for UNO, surrendering five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks over 4.2 innings. Jake Tuttle picked up his first save, holding the Mavs to one hit in the last four innings.
Sophomore Alex Schultz went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the day, and sophomore Cole Gruber, senior Dylan Casey and freshman Tyler Biggs each tallied and scored one run apiece. Biggs and sophomore Connor Messinger each drove in two runs for the Mavericks.
Milwaukee was led by Pat Wilson, who finished 2-for-4 with his three-run home run in the fifth inning that put the Panthers on top.
Both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth, when the Mavericks tallied four runs on five hits. Three consecutive singles by Schultz, Gruber and Casey loaded the bases for Biggs, who doubled down the left field line to score two. Messinger then doubled to left center to plate Biggs and Casey, putting UNO up 4-0.
The lead was short-lived, however, as UWM responded immediately in the bottom of the frame with five runs on five hits. After two quick runs, the rally was capped with Wilson's three-run homer to right, all the lead the Panthers needed for the 5-4 win.
Omaha continues play at the Snowbird Classic on Saturday, Feb. 22, facing Northwestern. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. (CT) in Port Charlotte, Fla., and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
