Spenner Highlights Busy Day For Mavericks

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sami Spenner broke the American collegiate record for the pentathlon and set three new school records at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday afternoon.
Spenner finished runner up in the competition with 4,498 points, breaking her previous school record of 4,406 which she set on Jan. 31 at Northern Iowa. It marks the fourth time that Spenner has broke the school record in the event.
On her way to setting the school record in pentathlon, Spenner also set a school record in the long jump with a leap of 20-09 ¾ and the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.52. Spenner finished third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.87, setting a new PR as well as setting a new PR in the high jump with a jump of 5-09 ¼. In Spenner's only other event of the day, she finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40-02 ¼.
While Spenner was competing in Albuquerque, the Maverick distance runners were in Lincoln for the Nebraska Tune-Up. Kristin Rogers set a new PR in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:14.51, finishing second, while Lindsey Burns finished eighth with a time of 19:03.25. Katarina Zarudnaya finished runner-up in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.40, setting a new PR, while Alyssa Thavenet (2:16.84) and Jackie Mezick (2:27.46) also set PR's in the event.
The rest of the Maverick athletes were in Vermillion, S.D. to compete in the USD Open. Kathie Lee-Laidley tied her PR of 8.96 in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing second. Nicole Liske finished runner-up in the 60 meter dash 8.06.
Macy Woitzel and Maddie Diggs both set new PR's in the long jump with leaps of 15-11 and 15-07 3/4 , respectively, while Megan Adams set a new PR in the weight throw with a toss of 43-09.
The Mavericks will finish the indoor portion of their 2013-14 season next weekend at the Summit League Indoor Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind. A start time has yet to be announced.
