Mavericks Fall to Iowa, 7-1

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Omaha baseball team took an early lead for the third straight game but saw Iowa rally on Sunday, falling 7-1 to the Hawkeyes at the Snowbird Classic. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 0-3 (0-0 Summit League), while Iowa improves to 6-1 (0-0 Big Ten) after a 4-0 weekend sweep at the tournament.
Tyler Peyton (1-0) snagged the win on the mound, going 8.0 innings while allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks. The loss went to Tyler Hamer (0-1), who gave up four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
Mitch Larson made his first collegiate start and went 4.0 innings, surrendering one run on four hits with one strikeout in his debut outing.
Clayton Taylor went 1-for-4 with the Mavericks' only run scored, while Cole Gruber (1-for-3), Caleb Palensky (1-for-3) and Mark Handberg (1-for-1) each tallied a hit for the day.
Omaha notched its only run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Taylor doubled to right and advanced to third on Gruber's single through the right side, then stole home to put UNO up 1-0.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Iowa came back for a single run in the fourth to tie it at 1-1. The Hawkeyes then plated two runs in the fifth to grab the lead at 3-1. They added two more in the eighth and another pair in the ninth, securing the win by a tally of 7-1.
Iowa's Nick Day finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Jake Mangler (2-for-3, three runs), Taylor Zeutenhorst (2-for-4, two RBI, one run) and Kris Goodman (2-for-4, three RBI, one run) each had two hits for the day.
Following a day off, Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to face St. Bonaventure. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (CT) in Port Charlotte, Fla.
