Mavericks Host Colorado College For Senior Weekend

The Omaha Mavericks play their final home games of the regular season when they host Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-March 1. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. from the CenturyLink Center. Saturday's game will feature a recognition of UNO's six seniors.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 13-15-2 overall and 10-8-2-1 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, putting them in third place. The Mavericks are coming off a 5-1 win and a 5-3 loss at Western Michigan last weekend. The Mavs are 7-9-0 at home this year. They lead the all-time series with the Tigers, 5-4-1 and are 3-1-0 vs. CC at home. The Mavericks are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.
Colorado College is 6-18-6 overall and 6-9-5-1 in the NCHC, putting it in seventh place. The Tigers swept Denver in a home-and-home series last weekend. They won 3-2 in Denver on Friday and 3-1 back home on Saturday. CC is 1-11-2 on the road this year and 4-3-3 in its last 10 games.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks earned their fourth straight split last weekend, beating Western Michigan 5-1 before losing 5-3. On Friday, the Mavs scored three goals in the third period to blow open a close game. Zahn Raubenheimer and Dominic Zombo scored to put UNO up 2-0 before WMU's Chase Balisy scored to make it 2-1 after two. In the third, Josh Archibald scored at 3:09, and Austin Ortega converted a pass from Brock Montpetit at 9:22 to put UNO up, 4-1. Jake Guentzel iced the game when he scored into an empty net at 18:45. Ryan Massa, in his first start in more than a month, made 32 saves for the win.
On Saturday, Archibald opened the scoring at 3:09 of the second period and following a goal by the Broncos, he scored again on the power play at 10:07. Tanner Lane then scored on a breakaway at 15:09 of the period to put the Mavs up 3-1 after two. But Western Michigan turned the tables on the Mavs, getting three goals in 3:07 midway through the third to take the lead. WMU then added an empty-netter at 19:20 to close the scoring. Massa had 20 saves in goal.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 349-198-51 (.626) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 87-83-18 (.511). Saturday's game will be the 600th of his career.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Scott Owens is in his 15th year as head coach at Colorado College. The 1979 graduate of CC is 323-222-54 all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by Joe Bonnett and Eric Rud.
