Chicago State Drops Mavs in Extra Innings, 2-1

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped an extra-innings decision to Chicago State on Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 in 11 innings at the Snowbird Classic. The Mavericks are now 1-4 (0-0 Summit League), while the Cougars improve to 3-5 (0-0 WAC).
Caleb Palensky led UNO at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Justin Threlkeld (2-for-4, one RBI) and Alex Schultz (2-for-5) also had multi-hit efforts for the day.
CSU was led by Jordan Stroschein, who finished 3-for-5, and Sanfor Hunt, who was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Jerry Silva (1-0) earned the win on the mound, holding Omaha hitless over 3.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout and no walks. The loss went to Gregg Gausden (0-1), who surrendered one run on two hits over 2.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out two in his first appearance as a Maverick.
UNO scored first in the top of the fourth. With one out, Palensky doubled to left, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and finally scored on Threlkeld's RBI single to center to make it 1-0.
Chicago State evened it at 1-1 with a run in the seventh, as Julian Russell scored when Mattingly Romanin reached on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 11th. Hunt led off with a single, and the Cougars managed to load the bases with one out, and Evan Davis reached on a fielder's choice to bring Hunt across for the final rally of 2-1.
Omaha returns to action on Friday, Feb. 28, facing Villanova at 10 a.m. (CT) in Port Charlotte, Fla.
