Spenner Continues Dominance, Zarudnaya Sets Record

VERMILLION, S.D. – Sami Spenner added to her list of top performances this season, winning three events for the Omaha track & field team while Katarina Zarudnaya set a new school record in the mile run.
While nearly all of the team was in Vermillion competing in the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet, distance runner Katarina Zarudnaya was in Lincoln where she set a new school record in the mile run at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. She won the event with a time of 4:54.62, shaving nearly two seconds off the previous school record set last year by Amanda Vorthmann (4:56.57).
Spenner won the 60 meter hurdles (8.57), 60 meter dash (7.52), and 200 meter dash (24.67). Spenner's time of 8.57 in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles was just two tenths of a second shy of tying the school record.
Omaha got another first-place finish in the first event of the day as Kathie Lee-Laidley won the long jump with a season best jump of 18-09 ¾. Payton Horacek finished the event in fifth with a jump of 17-01 ½, while Nicole Liske finished sixth with a leap of 17-00 ¾.
Other notable finishes by Maverick athletes included: Ashley Kildow finishing second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.44 and Lauren Psota finishing seventh with a time of 2:23.90; Lindsey Bruns set a new PR in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:34.50 finishing seventh; and Terri Armstrong finishing seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 26.52.
Next week, the Mavericks return to action at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa on February 14-15. Competition from Leid Recreation Athletic Center will start at 11 a.m. each day.
