Mavs Second After Day 1 of Summit Championships

FORT WAYNE, IND – The Omaha track and field team opened up day one of the Summit League Championships with two first-place finishes, leaving the Mavs in second place with 34 points.
Sami Spenner had both firsts, winning the long jump and the pentathlon. She also won four of the five events scored towards the pentathlon. Spenner competed in the long jump twice, winning both the open competition and the pentathlon competition with leaps of 20-01 and 19-09, respectively. The senior from Columbus, Neb. also won the 60 meter hurdles (8.75), high jump (5-06), shot put (39-07 ¾) and pentathlon (4,027). Her pentathlon score set a new conference record while her leap in the open competition of the long jump set a new facility record.
Liz Thompson set a new personal record in the weight throw with a toss of 53-05, finishing eighth, and Megan Adams finished 13th with a throw of 42-04. Four Maverick athletes finished in the top eight of the long jump with Spenner 20-01 (1), Denneil Shaw 18-07 1/4 (4), Kathie Lee-Laidley 18-07 (5) and Payton Horacek 17-09 3/4 (8).
Other notable finishes included: Spenner (7.56) and Horacek (7.99) both qualified for tomorrow's 60 meter dash finals; Spenner also qualified for the 200 meter dash finals with a time of 24.74. Terri Armstrong just missed out on Saturday's 400 meter dash finals, finishing ninth with a time of 59.54. Katarina Zarudnaya qualified in first place for tomorrow's 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.99 while Amanda Alexander set a new PR in the pentathlon by more than 100 points with a total of 2,899 points.
The Mavericks will finish up the Summit League Championships tomorrow with finals in the track events and competition in the rest of field events. Action will resume at 8:30 a.m. (CT) from the IPFW Athletics Center Fieldhouse.
