PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Omaha baseball team closed out its four-game weekend series at Grand Canyon on Sunday, falling 5-2 at Brazell Stadium. The Mavericks are now 5-7 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Antelopes improve to 7-8 (0-0 WAC) after taking the series, 3-1.
Sophomore Cole Gruber led the Mavericks offensively, finishing 3-for-5 on the day. Sophomores Alex Schultz and Clayton Taylor each had two hits with a run scored, while senior Caleb Palensky was 1-for-4 and drove in UNO's two runs.
Matt Haggerty finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while David Walker and Paul Panaccione each had two hits and a run scored. Panaccione also drove in another run for the afternoon.
Coley Bruns (2-0) picked up the win for GCU after throwing 7.1 innings, limiting UNO to one run on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk. The loss went to sophomore Marcus Ethen (1-1), who allowed three runs on five hits over 3.0 innings. Scott Serigstad earned his first save of the season, keeping UNO scoreless in the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Grand Canyon took a 1-0 lead in the second, then pushed it to 3-0 in the third. After an Antelope run in the fifth and another in the sixth, Omaha trailed 5-0.
The Mavericks tallied two runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, Schultz singled through the right side, followed by a Taylor single up the middle. Freshman Mark Handberg then singled to right, loading the bases for Palensky, who laced a two-run single through the left side to score Schultz and Taylor and cut it to 5-2.
GCU then loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Sam Murphy entered the game in relief of senior Josh Bullock, getting out of the jam with a foul out and a groundout.
UNO threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases on three straight singles by sophomore Connor Messinger, junior Justin Threlkeld and Gruber. The Antelopes got a groundout for a double play, however, taking the win by a score of 5-2.
