Archibald, Guentzel, Blais Up for NCHC Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha junior Josh Archibald is one of four players under consideration for Player of the Year in inaugural season for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference while freshman Jake Guentzel is in the running for Rookie of the Year.
The conference released the list of finalists for the eight individual awards today. Head coach Dean Blais also is in the running for the Herb Brooks Coach of the Year award for leading the Mavericks to third place after they had been picked to finish last in the NCHC pre-season media poll. Joining Blais in consideration for the coach of the year award is North Dakota's Dave Hakstol, a former Blais player and assistant at UND, and Bob Motzko who led St. Cloud State to the Penrose Cup as regular season champions.
Archibald, who was named a member of the NCHC All-Conference First Team on Wednesday, is in the running for the Player of the Year along with goaltender Sam Brittain of Denver, forward Nic Dowd of St. Cloud State and defenseman Dillon Simpson of North Dakota.
Archibald is also one of three players under consideration for Forward of the Year along with Miami's Austin Czarnik and Dowd.
Guentzel, who was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team on Wednesday, is competing for Rookie of the Year honors against Denver forward Trevor Moore and Colorado College defenseman Jaccob Slavin.
Other individual awards include Defenseman of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, Offensive Defenseman of the Year and Defensive Forward of the Year.
Finalists were determined based on voting by the conference's head coaches and one student-athlete from each team. The top three vote getters, plus ties, were the finalists.
The winners of all eight awards will be announced Thursday, March 20 at the NCHC Awards Celebration in Minneapolis on the eve of the inaugural NCHC Frozen Faceoff at the Target Center.
