Mavs Open at Home With Wichita State

The Omaha softball team plays its 2014 home opener when Wichita State visits for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday at Westside Field at Westbrook. Live stats will be available at OMavs.com. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. UNO students get in free with their MavCard.
The Teams
Omaha (16-9) went 2-1 at the Fighting Illini Classic over the weekend. It was the final tournament of the spring for the Mavericks, as they now open their home schedule on Tuesday. Of the 27 remaining games on the Mavs' schedule, 13 are set for Westside Field at Westbrook. Amber Lutmer leads the team with a .384 batting average and a Summit League-best 11 home runs and 34 RBI. Allie Mathewson is hitting .382 with seven home runs and 24 runs scored. Campbell Ditto hits .329 with six homers and 24 runs scored as well. Dana Elsasser has a 13-4 record in the circle with a 1.56 ERA. She has six shutouts in 15 starts.
Wichita State is 15-9 overall after taking two of three from Loyola to open Missouri Valley Conference play over the weekend. The Shockers are led by Paige Luellen's .387 average, six home runs and 29 RBI. Cacy Williams is hitting .373 with five home runs and 26 RBI. The Shockers are hitting .312 as a team and have 25 home runs this season. Kaitlyn Malone is 8-2 in the circle with a 5.15 ERA. She has started 15 of the 24 games. Sloan Anderson has made seven starts and has a 6-7 record with a 4.27 ERA.

The Mavericks went 2-1 at the Fighting Illini Classic to move their season record to 16-9. It was the final tournament of the spring for the Mavericks. The Mavericks posted a sweep on day one in Illinois, winning 8-0 (5 inn.) over Saint Louis and 5-3 over Western Michigan. UNO fell to host Illinois on Saturday in the finale, 6-1. Dana Elsasser earned both wins on Friday, throwing a shutout against Saint Louis before coming on in relief for the comeback win over Western Michigan. Elsasser allowed just one hit to Saint Louis in the five-inning shutout with five strikeouts and two walks. She pitched 2.0 innings against Western Michigan with one hit, four strikeouts and two walks. Elsasser held her weekend opponents to a .163 batting average. Lutmer and Lizzie Noble each hit .444 on the weekend. Lia Mancuso added a .429 weekend at the plate, while Sydney Hames hit .333. Kat Barrow started and pitched 5.0 innings against Western Michigan, allowing three hits and three unearned runs. She limited opponents to a .176 batting average.

Tuesday's game is the first of four home games this week for the Mavericks. UNO opens Summit League play this weekend against South Dakota at Westside Field at Westbrook. The Mavs and Coyotes play a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. and finish the series Saturday at Noon.

• Amber Lutmer's solo home run in the first inning against Illinois last Saturday was the 45th homer of her career, moving her alone into first place in school history past Leslie Svoboda. Lutmer leads the Summit League with 11 home runs and 34 RBI this season, and she has a team-best .384 batting average. In addition to her 45 career homers, Lutmer has 166 career RBI to rank second, needing 27 to break Svoboda's mark of 192. Lutmer also holds the school record for walks in a career (97).
• Allie Mathewson is second in the Summit League with seven home runs and tied for third with teammate Campbell Ditto with 24 runs scored. Mathewson is hitting .382, while Ditto hits .329 with six home runs and 18 RBI.
• Dana Elsasser has 13 of the Mavs' 16 wins this season. Elsasser has a 1.56 ERA and has an opponent batting average of .181. Elsasser's career 1.25 ERA ranks seventh-best in school history, and her .195 opponent batting average is second-best. Her 57 career wins rank eighth in school history and her 31 shutouts rank fourth.
• Sydney Hames is enjoying a strong sophomore season. Hames is hitting .326 and has a .966 fielding percentage at third base with just three errors in 89 chances.
• Shortstop Tonya Peterson will be out for a few weeks with a fractured bone in her face after a grounder bounced up and struck her near the eye against Colorado State on March 9.
• The Mavs lead all Summit League teams in numerous categories, including 30 home runs, 92 walks and a .475 slugging percentage. The Mavs rank second in runs scored (136) and on-base percentage (.385). The Mavs' pitching staff has a 2.87 ERA to rank second in the league.
