This Week
For the first time this spring, the Omaha men's and women's golf teams will be in action on the same week. The men are at Little Rock, Ark. for the Arkansas Little Rock/First Tee Collegiate Classic on Monday and Tuesday, March 24-25. The women head to Florida for the Morehead State Ocala Spring Tournament in Dunnellon, Fla. on Sunday-Tuesday, March 23-25.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Last Time Out
The Omaha men's team finished 11th at the Sacramento State Invitational on March 3-4 in Sacramento, Calif. Karl Krieser led the Mavericks with a three-round score of 223 to finish in a tie for 27th while Mitch Ryan was second for the Mavs and 43rd in the field of 68 golfers with a score of 228. Alex Overfelt was third (230/T-45th overall), Taylor Sidzyik was fourth (235/T-56th), and Alex Holtan was fifth (237/T-59th). It was the Mavericks' second tournament of the spring.
The women's team opened the spring season with a 14th-place finish at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Feb. 24-25. Katie Kesti led the Mavericks in scoring with a three-round total of 252, good for a tie for 54th overall. Sophie Peters was second for UNO at 259, putting her in a tie for 66th. Makenna Kroeker was third for the Mavs (266/75th overall), Kat Slump was fourth (284/83rd), and Gentry Carveth was fifth (287/84th).
Mavericks' Scoring Leaders
Karl Krieser is leading the Omaha men's team in scoring this season with a stroke average of 76.1 through 18 rounds. He's posted two top-10 finishes and one top-five. Krieser tied his career best when he shot a round of 70 in the second round of the UNO Maverick Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 7, one of two players to post the low round of the season. He owns three of the top five rounds this season.
Alex Overfelt is second in scoring for UNO with an average of 77.1 while Mitch Ryan is third at 77.4 with two top-10s and one top-five finish. Alex Holtan is in fourth (77.7) and Lucas Gervais is in fifth at 78.8 in 12 rounds, a total that includes UNO's other round of 70 this season at the Erv Kaiser Invitational on Sept. 17.
Katie Kesti leads the UNO women with a stroke average of 80.4 in 15 rounds this season. She's had two top-10 finishes and one top-five. She also owns the team's best round of the year with a career-best 70 at the Bellevue Shootout on Oct. 18. She and Sophie Peters each own three of the team's top six rounds this season.
Peters is second in team scoring with a stroke average of 81. She leads the team with three top-10 finishes and has one in the top five. Makenna Kroeker is third in scoring at 86 with one top-10 finish while Gentry Carveth is fourth (88) and Kat Slump is fifth (93.7).

The men are back down south at the Wallace Jones Tournament hosted by Louisiana Monroe on Monday and Tuesday, March 31-April 1. The women travel east to the Saluki Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois on Sunday and Monday, March 30-31.
