Larson Excels at Home Course in First Collegiate Start

A spectacular finish to her round made freshman Eden Larson a winner in her Maverick debut.Â
Larson birdied her final two holes to pull out a one-shot victory in Omaha's season-opening Fall Stampede at The Creek on Tuesday.
Larson broke a three-way tie for individual honors with her late birdies on an overcast day at Indian Creek Golf Course. Larson finished the tournament at even-par with a 54-hole total of 216 (74-70-72). Nebraska's Symran Shah was runner-up at 1-over.Â
"I think it's amazing to win this," Larson said. "It's a huge accomplishment for me."
Larson was tied for the lead with Nebraska's Shah and Ammy Raemmuang for most of the back nine Tuesday. All three were playing in different pairings.
Larson, who started her final round of the 13th hole, broke the tie on the par-5 11th hole. She hit her second shot into a greenside bunker before delivering her most clutch stroke of the day. Larson's shot out of the bunker rolled within three feet of the hole and then sank that short putt.
"I'm usually not that good at bunker shots so that really surprised me," Larson said.
That birdie, just her second one of the day, put Larson in front for good. But Omaha coach Victoria Grasso said Larson was just playing her game down the stretch.
"She's really good at just staying in the moment. I don't know if she knew the position she was in at that point," said Grasso, whose Mavericks also ran away with the team title by 25 strokes over Northern Iowa.
Larson, who said she putted very well during Monday's first two rounds, then secured the win with another crucial putt on the par-4 12th hole.
Larson hit her approach shot within 10 feet of the hole and rolled in the birdie putt. That proved to be an important putt as Shah also made birdie on her final hole.
Larson said she wasn't very familiar with Indian Creek before signing with the Mavericks. But practicing on the course in the preseason has shown Larson that the layout suits her game.
"I'm a long hitter and I just had some wedges into holes (this tournament)," Larson said.
Larson signed with Omaha after a successful golf career at Lincoln Southwest High School. Larson won the Class A state gold medal as a sophomore and junior before placing third as a senior.
"I wanted to stay close to home and I already knew most of the girls on the team," Larson said. "And there's great facilities here at Indian Creek."
Added Grasso: "She's going to have a very successful career here."
