Mavs Look to Rebound at Colorado State Classic

The Omaha softball team is back in action this weekend at the Colorado State Spring Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. The Mavericks open the tournament against Dayton on Friday at 10 a.m. (CT), then play Colorado State at 2:30 p.m. (CT). On Saturday, Omaha takes the diamond with Southern Utah at 10 a.m. (CT) and follows immediately after with Dayton at 12:15 p.m. (CT). The Mavs close out the tournament with Colorado State on 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Sunday. Live stats will be available for all games at OMavs.com.
The Teams
Omaha (12-7) is coming off a 1-4 weekend at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., last weekend playing its toughest competition to date. The Mavs had won seven straight games before dropping the final four games of the tournament. Leadoff hitter Allie Mathewson is batting .409 with five home runs, 14 RBI, four doubles, two triples and five stolen bases. Amber Lutmer is hitting .368 with a Summit League-best nine home runs and 30 RBI. Sydney Hames is batting .300 with five doubles and 12 RBI, and Campbell Ditto hits .309 with four home runs and 13 RBI. Ace Dana Elsasser is 9-3 with a 1.71 ERA and 66 strikeouts. She has completed all 11 of her starts and has three shutouts.
Dayton is 4-10 after a 1-3 weekend at the Elon Phoenix Tournament last weekend. The Flyers have five players hitting over .300, led by Rachel Archer at .386. Gabrielle Snyder hits .368, and Tiffany Ricks has a .353 average with team highs of three home runs, nine RBI and 13 runs scored. Snyder has a 3-3 record and 3.35 ERA in the circle. Kayla English has a team-high six games started with a 1-5 record and 5.63 ERA.
Colorado State is off to an 8-3 start and played just one of six scheduled games last weekend at the San Diego Classic because of heavy rain. The Rams are led by Danielle Wikre's .485 batting average, three home runs and 10 RBI. Ashlie Ortega hits .333 with one homer and 11 RBI, while Chelsea O'Connor hits .314 with three home runs and 14 RBI. Holly Reinke is 5-0 in the circle with a 1.24 ERA but has started just three of CSU's 11 games. Larisa Petakoff (1-3, 2.66 ERA) and Molly Randle (2-0, 5.67 ERA) each have four starts.
Southern Utah is 2-11 on the season. The Thunderbirds have just one player hitting over .300, but she is well over, as Madison Resley is batting .483 with three home runs and 13 RBI to lead the team. Kylee Wolf is the next top threat with a .295 average, two home runs and 13 RBI. Only Jordan Theurer has wins for SUU in the circle, as she is 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA. Ariel Hart has a 6.30 ERA and 0-3 record in five starts.
Series History
UNO is 2-0 all-time against Dayton, 1-1 against Colorado State and 0-1 against Southern Utah, who beat the Mavs 5-1 on Feb. 8 at the Red Desert Classic this season.

• Although her reached base streak came to an end at an impressive 50 games last Saturday, Amber Lutmer led the Mavs at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic with a .462 batting average, two home runs, three runs and three RBI. Her two homers – both in the win against Maryland – moved her to 43 for her career, within one of Leslie Svoboda's school-record 44 career homers.
• The Mavs lead all Summit League teams in numerous categories, including 23 home runs, 108 runs, 73 walks drawn and a .475 slugging percentage. The Mavs' pitching staff has a 3.12 ERA to rank second in the league.
• Junior Mara Eeman has three home runs and 10 RBI already this season, surpassing her sophomore totals of one homer and nine RBI. Eeman also has raised her batting average from .172 to .240. Sophomore Sydney Hames is hitting .318 this season after batting .256 as a freshman. Hames already has 21 hits this season after 23 all of last year.

Omaha senior first baseman Amber Lutmer was named National Field Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com on Feb. 25. The honor comes one day after Lutmer earned Summit League Player of the Week. Lutmer had a monster weekend at the UTSA Mid-Major classic to lead the Mavs to a perfect 5-0 record. She hit a team-high .556 with four home runs (two grand slams) and a team-best 17 RBI on the weekend. Lutmer had a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage.
Elsasser, Lutmer Take Summit League Weekly Awards
Dana Elsasser was named Summit League Co-Pitcher of the Week, and first baseman Amber Lutmer earned Summit League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Feb. 24. Elsasser was the league's pitcher of the week four times last season, and this marks the ninth career weekly honor for the Hershey, Neb., native. She shared the weekly award with North Dakota State's Krista Menke. Elsasser earned four of the Mavs' five wins at the UTSA Mid-Major Classic and posted a 1.08 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched. For Lutmer, it was her first career Summit League weekly honor and the third weekly conference award in her career. She had a monster weekend, hitting a team-high .556 with four home runs (two grand slams) and a team-best 17 RBI on the weekend.
Standout Seniors
UNO's senior class is small in numbers, but is critical to the Mavs' success. Pitcher Dana Elsasser and first baseman Amber Lutmer are both in their final seasons at UNO, and both will wind up among the greatest Mavericks of all-time. Elsasser, the Mavericks' ace the past two seasons, was arguably the most dominant pitcher in the Summit League as a junior with a league-best 0.62 ERA in conference games. Elsasser's career 1.26 ERA ranks seventh-best in school history, and her .198 opponent batting average is second-best. Her 53 career wins rank tied for eighth in school history and her 28 shutouts are fourth. Lutmer has proven to be one of the top power hitters in UNO history, and she has numerous career offensive records in her sights. She has 43 career homers and needs two to break Leslie Svoboda's school record of 44. Lutmer has 162 career RBI to rank second and needs 31 to break Svoboda's mark of 192. Lutmer holds the school record for walks in a career (91).
