Mavs Sign Vanessa Barajas on Signing Day

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska Omaha women's basketball program announced the signing of 6-3 center Vanessa Barajas to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
Barajas, from Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Ariz., will join the Mavericks as a freshman next season. Barajas is a strong, mobile 6-3 center who is in just her fifth year of playing organized basketball. Barajas averaged 4.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game in her senior season on a talented Mesquite team that went 26-6 overall and 12-2 in its league. The Wildcats reached the state quarterfinals in Arizona's largest class.
"We are very excited to sign Vanessa. She is a tremendous person that shares the intangible qualities we value most at Omaha," Head Coach Brittany Lange said. "In addition, she is a player with a great deal of potential and work ethic to match it. Vanessa is a defensive-minded center with good hands and has taken on some of the top post players in the country during her time at Mesquite. She has a good feel for the game and is still learning some of the intricacies of basketball having just started playing competitively a few years ago, but there is no doubt she has the physical build, talent and mindset to develop into a very good collegiate center. She has already come a long way in a short amount of time, and we are excited to have her on campus and continue her development."
Barajas joins guards Remy Davenport (Blue Springs, Mo.) and Annie Penquite (Des Moines, Iowa) as the 2014 signing class. Davenport and Penquite signed last November.
