Mavs Finish Road Swing at South Dakota State

The Omaha softball team finishes its eight-game road stretch when the Mavericks head to Brookings, S.D., this weekend for a three-game series at South Dakota State. It begins with a Friday doubleheader at 2 p.m. and ends with a Saturday Noon game. Live stats will be available for all games at OMavs.com. The Mavericks
• Amber Lutmer leads the Summit League and ranks tied for 11th nationally with 14 home runs and has a team-high 38 RBI. Lutmer is second on the team with a .333 batting average. She is the school-record holder for career homers (48) and is 22 RBI away from tying the career school mark of 167. Lutmer's 48 career homers rank seventh among active Division I players.
• The top three home run hitters in the Summit League are all Mavericks. In addition to Lutmer's 14 homers, Campbell Ditto has 10 and Allie Mathewson has eight. The Mavs lead the league with 40 home runs this season.
• Mathewson hits a team-best .358 to go with her eight homers, 33 runs and 22 RBI. She has 10 doubles and two triples for a team-high 20 extra-base hits. Mathewson's career .706 slugging percentage entering the week ranks 26th among active DI players. Sydney Hames is hitting .317 with one homer, eight doubles and 24 RBI. Ditto hits .298 with 10 homers, 30 RBI and 29 runs.
• Dana Elsasser is 19-7 this season with a 2.07 ERA. Her 19 victories rank tied for 11th nationally and lead the Summit League. Elsasser has seven shutouts and an opponent batting average of .202 this season. Elsasser's career 1.42 ERA entering this week ranks fourth among active DI players and her 63 wins rank 28th. Elsasser's 31 career shutouts are tied for eighth-most among active DI players.
• Kat Barrow has the most starts of anyone other than Elsasser, starting nine games in the circle with a 1-6 record and 4.88 ERA. Freshman Cheyenne Baxter (2-0, 4.69 ERA) is coming off a strong weekend in which she pitched 12.1 total innings with just three earned runs, and she picked up the win in her start in game three of the series at Fort Wayne.
Scouting South Dakota State
South Dakota State is 7-26 overall and 2-10 in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits, who have lost eight in a row, are led by Elyse Eitel's .321 batting average, two home runs and 15 RBI. Sammy Bingham hits .305 with a team-high 16 runs scored and has three triples. Devan Larsen has three homers and 17 RBI and hits .200. Of her 14 hits this season, nine have gone for extra bases. Ashlyn Bender and Jennifer Sutton each have 13 starts in the circle. Bender is 4-8 with a 6.62 ERA, while Sutton is 3-11 with a 7.10 ERA. Katie Lang is 0-7 with a 6.56 ERA.

AMES, Iowa - The Omaha softball team (23-15) got off to a fast start and held on late for a 3-2 win over Iowa State (20-22) on Wednesday. The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after key hits and a bit of good fortune. Allie Mathewson sent the first pitch of the game off the wall in left field for a double. Amber Lutmer then hit a high fly ball to left center that was dropped, allowing Lutmer to reach second on the error and Mathewson third with no outs. After ISU pitcher Paris Imholz recorded a pair of outs, Lizzie Noble delivered a two-run double to the gap in left center to plate Mathewson and Lutmer for the 2-0 lead. The lead gave Dana Elsasser some breathing room to work with. And she battled through a bases-loaded jam in the second inning with a strikeout of Brittany Gomez. UNO tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Mara Eeman led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tonya Peterson. With two outs, Tara Trede singled home Eeman for the 3-0 lead. ISU got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Jordan Spendlove to score Rachel Hartman and make it 3-1. The Cyclones cut it to 3-2 in the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs, but the Mavs again found a way out. Liana Henry bounced the ball right in front of the plate, and UNO catcher Campbell Ditto alertly picked the ball up and tagged her to end the threat. In the top of the seventh, the Mavs looked to stretch the lead, loading the bases via a walk and two hit by pitches. Lutmer drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Nicole Warren. Sydney Hames was then hit by a pitch and replaced by pinch-runner Megan Stegman. Ditto was also hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for Noble. The freshman almost put the game away with a near-grand slam, but her long drive was about a foot outside the foul pole. She ended up grounding to short to force out Warren at home plate, and Eeman flied out to center to leave the bases juiced for UNO. However, Elsasser closed the door in the seventh despite a Cyclone reaching second with one out. Elsasser improved to 19-7 after throwing the complete game with two earned runs on 10 hits, four walks and with six strikeouts. Mathewson was 2-for-4 with a run, while Peterson went 2-for-2.
