Apr 29, 2014 | Softball
OMAHA, Neb. - College Sports Madness has named UNO softball pitcher Dana Elsasser the National Pitcher of the Week.
The honor comes one day after Elsasser picked up her third Summit League Pitcher of the Week honor this season. However, this is the first national weekly honor for the senior from Hershey, Neb. It's the second national award the Maverick softball team has garnered this season, as Amber Lutmer was named National Field Player of the Week on Feb. 25.
Elsasser went 3-0 on the week with three complete-game shutouts and picked up her first career no-hitter in an 8-0 (5 inn.) win over North Dakota on Tuesday. In the no-hitter, Elsasser allowed two walks and struck out five. She recorded another five-inning shutout, this one a one-hitter, in an 8-0 (5 inn.) win over IUPUI on Friday, tossing four strikeouts with just one walk. Then on Senior Day on Saturday, Elsasser shut out the Jaguars once more, going 7.0 innings with six hits allowed and five strikeouts in a 5-0 win.
For the week, Elsasser allowed just seven hits in 17.0 innings and struck out 14 while holding her opponents to a .127 batting average. She leads the Summit League in wins this season with 24.
