Three Mavericks Named All-Region in Softball

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha softball players Dana Elsasser, Amber Lutmer and Allie Mathewson were all named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second team today.
This is the second honor for Mathewson who was named to the All-Midwest Region first team last season. She was a Capital One Academic All-District 7 selection and All-Summit League First Team selection at center field for the second straight year after leading the Mavericks in hitting with a .366 average and a team-best 27 extra-base hits. As the leadoff hitter, she hit 11 home runs to tie for second-most in the league, and her 45 runs scored ranked third among all Summit League players and led UNO. She had a team-high 63 hits, 13 doubles and three triples, stole 8-of-10 bases and struck out just 21 times in 172 at bats (12 percent).
Mathewson's career .713 slugging percentage finishing the regular season ranked 26th among active DI players. In addition to her team-leading 27 extra-base hits, she led UNO with 20 multiple-hit games and six three-hit games. Her eight-game hitting streak from Feb. 28-March 14 matched the longest by a Maverick in 2014.
The native of Papillion, Neb. hit a home run in three consecutive games from Feb. 16-21. She also hit .339 in conference play with four homers, nine RBI and 14 runs scored. She went 9-for-16 (.563) at the Auburn Tiger Invitational on Feb. 15-16 with six runs, four RBI, two doubles and two home runs. At the Tiger Invitational, she had three 3-for-4 performances and scored two runs in each of the three games.
Mathewson followed up the next weekend at the UTSA Tournament with at least one hit, run and RBI in all five games, along with two more homers. She finished the season strong, going 21-for-50 (.420) over the final 14 games with 15 runs and 10 RBI. She had at least one hit in 12 of the final 14 games to help the Mavs go 12-2 in that stretch.
Elsasser capped her standout career with an All-Summit League First-Team selection after leading the league with a 1.12 ERA in conference games. She finished 27-7 overall on the season with a 1.72 ERA. Her 27 wins ranked first in the league and tied for sixth nationally in the regular season.
Elsasser threw her first career no-hitter on April 24 in an 8-0 (5 inn.) win over North Dakota at Westside Field at Westbrook. She was named College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week on April 29 and Summit League Pitcher of the Week following her no-hitter and two other shutouts for a 3-0 week against North Dakota and IUPUI. During that week, she allowed just seven hits in 17.0 innings and struck out 14 while holding opponents to a .127 batting average.
The native of Hershey, Neb. picked up three Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors on the season for 11 career weekly pitching awards. She notched the Mavericks' first win over a ranked DI opponent in the DI era when she shut down No. 19 Nebraska for a 3-2 win in Lincoln on April 8. In that game, she held the Huskers to just six hits and took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Elsasser finished her season and career by tossing 40 straight shutout innings that included six straight shutouts and allowed just 13 total runs in 12 league appearances, fewest among No. 1 pitchers, and posted a 10-2 record in league play with seven shutouts.
Her 71 career victories ranked 24th among active Division I pitchers and seventh in UNO history, and her 39 career shutouts ranked third in school history and among active DI pitchers at the end of the regular season. She posted a career 1.36 ERA to rank fourth among active DI pitchers and ninth overall in school history. For her career, Elsasser held opponents to a .198 batting average, second-best in school history. Her 82 career complete games rank third in UNO history.
Lutmer earned All-Summit League First-Team honors after leading the Summit League with 17 home runs and finishing the regular season tied for 10th nationally. She hit .351 to rank 10th in the Summit League and second on the team. She also ranked second in the Summit League in RBI (47), was first in walks (42), led the league with a .746 slugging percentage and was second with a .508 on-base percentage.
Lutmer was named College Sports Madness National Player of the Week and Summit League Player of the Week following her breakout performance at the UTSA Tournament where she hit .556 (10-for-18) with four home runs (two grand slams) and a team-best 17 RBI on the weekend. She also had a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage at the UTSA Tournament while extending her reached-base streak to 47 straight games dating back to 2013. She eventually posted a 50-game reached base streak that came to an end on March 1 after reaching in 17 straight games to begin the season.
The native of Omaha had a team-best 10 multiple-RBI games, including six games with four or more RBI. She finished the season ranked seventh among active Division I players in career home runs (51) and broke the school record for career homers and walks (121) while finishing second at UNO in career RBI (179) behind Leslie Svoboda's 192.
All three players are now eligible for the NFCA All-American teams which will be announced on May 28.
